"Looking for a photographer who doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.”
Usually I just scroll past these inquiries—I get it, we all have budgets. We all have different priorities when it comes to spending money, especially on big purchases.
What gives me pause is the tone those posts often carry—words that imply photography is ridiculously priced or not worth that much.
Recently, I photographed a family celebration. Just weeks later, a member of that family passed away. Those photos—moments that maybe felt ordinary at the time—suddenly meant everything. They were shared across social media, will be printed and framed, and may even be used at the funeral. They became a way to hold on to someone who can no longer be held.
It makes you stop and think:
If you knew it was the last chance you’d have to freeze a moment in time with someone you love—how much would that be worth to you?
And maybe all you need is a photo from the incredible phone cameras we carry in our pockets now. That’s okay too. Not every moment requires a professional.
But please don’t diminish the weight of what photographers do. Because I know so many people who would give anything for just one more photograph with someone they love.
Moments pass.
Photographs remain.
