Photos I capture during a newborn session that you never even thought to ask for. 🤍

These photographs may not seem like the “main” images of your session, but they help tell the story. They’re the little pieces of your gallery that create the whole picture.

When I first arrive, I typically ask to start in the nursery.

You spent so much time thinking about how you wanted to decorate this space, choosing the little details and preparing it for your baby. I want to preserve that.

It also gives you a little extra time to finish any last-minute things while I get settled and adjust my camera settings to the light in the room.

And while I’m there, I’m looking for the details you may not even realize are worth photographing.

The little stuffed animal a grandparent picked out — the one that may someday become *the* stuffed animal they sleep with every night.

The artwork hanging on the wall with a prayer you chose for your baby.

The blanket someone handmade.

The books waiting on the shelf.

The little details of the room you brought your baby home to.

Right now, they’re simply part of your everyday life.

But years from now, they can tell a much bigger story.

They’ll remind you what the nursery looked like before it became a playroom. What you surrounded your baby with. Who loved them before they were old enough to remember. And all the little things you chose with so much thought and intention.

That’s why I love photographing more than just the people in front of me.

I want to photograph the little pieces of your life that make this chapter *yours.*

Because when you look back years from now, you may be surprised by which photographs make you stop and say,

“Oh, I remember that.” 🤍

Those are the photographs that help tell the whole story.

The world is constantly evolving, and I think the way we think about sharing our children online is evolving with it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the recent legal developments surrounding AI, child safety, and the use of children’s images online.

As a photographer, I’ve always believed in respecting parental permission. And I still do. I don’t think photographers who continue sharing images with parental consent are automatically doing something wrong, or that they care any less about the children they photograph.

But becoming a mom has made me look at these things differently.

I don’t share a ton of photos of my child online, but that decision wasn’t really about AI. It was more about recognizing that not everyone online needs access to every detail of our lives. I’m not super strict about it, either. I shared photos of him as a newborn, and I’ve had family and friends post photos that his face was showing. I don’t tell them to take the photos down.

Honestly, I’m still thinking through what all of this means for my business. I’ll continue asking clients for permission to share their images, while also being more thoughtful about what I choose to put online.

I also know AI is a much bigger conversation than just what photographers share. Ultimately, this topic has made me come back to “my why”. “Why” did I become a photographer.

I don’t capture these moments for myself. I capture them for you. For your family, your photo albums, your future, and for the generations who will one day look back at these moments. One of my most cherished memories with my grandma, who has since passed, was looking through photo albums together. Nearly every visit, we’d sit and look through photos, remembering the people, the moments, the stories. I loved hearing her stories. That’s what inspires me constantly.

There are thousands of beautiful photographs I’ve taken that have never made it to my social media feed. Sharing my work has never been the most important part of what I do.

For me, this isn’t about shaming other photographers or telling parents what they should do with their children’s images. It’s about being thoughtful about what feels right for me, my family, and the families I photograph.

I’m not sure exactly what changes I’ll make going forward, but I do know that the memories I capture for your family will always matter more to me than whether I get to share them. Your choice is what matters most.

I think there’s room for different perspectives in this conversation, and I’m still learning what this looks like for me.

When it comes to your family’s photos being shared online, which do you relate to most?

A. I appreciate when my photographer asks before sharing, and I’m comfortable with my children’s faces being shared on social media.

B. I’m comfortable sharing photos of my children myself, but I’d prefer that my photographer not share photos showing their faces. (Back of their head or detail kind of photos are fine!)

C. I’d prefer that my family’s photos not be shared publicly at all.

No judgment either way. I’m genuinely curious how other parents feel about this and want to better understand the families I have the privilege of photographing.

“They grow up so fast.” 🤍

And somehow, you don’t really understand just how fast until you’re looking back at their newborn photos wondering how that tiny baby ever became the little person standing in front of you.

That’s why photos matter. One day, they’ll ask to see pictures of themselves as a baby. They’ll want to see how tiny they were, how you held them, and what those early days looked like.

So capture it all. The sleepy snuggles, tiny toes, messy moments, and all the little details you never want to forget. 🤍

Because one day, these photos won’t just be memories for you, they’ll be part of their story, too.

Motherhood taught me that productivity doesn’t always look like checking things off a to-do list. 🤍

Before Mason, I was always in “go mode” — constantly feeling like I needed to be doing something the second my feet hit the floor each morning. Then postpartum came, and suddenly my days looked completely different. Some days I never changed out of pjs. I spent hours breastfeeding, rocking, holding, and being “nap trapped” on the couch with my baby in my arms.
And honestly? I used to feel guilty for it. Like I should be cleaning, organizing, or getting more done. But I’ve learned something so important:

This is productive. Comforting your baby is productive. Bonding with your child is productive. Resting and healing is productive. Slowing down enough to soak in these moments is productive.

The dishes can wait. The laundry can wait.
These little moments won’t. 🤍
