Bananas

These are one of several spider species known as “banana spiders”. Their actual name is Golden Silk Orb Weavers. They’re great web builders and will often build between trees (sometimes directly in a walking path), where they will sit in the middle of the web waiting for small to medium sized flying insects. They can also be found on power lines in more remote areas. Despite the impressive size of the females, their venom is usually harmless to humans. They are also not known to be aggressive to humans, biting only out of self defense.

Arms of Age

Though oak trees are common in the South, these particular oak trees, with their long limbs heavy with age dipping low to the ground, can be found at the entrance to Jungle Gardens at Avery Island. Near New Iberia, LA. 2020.

Jungle Gardens was founded by Edward Avery McIlhenny, son of E. McIlhenny - the founder of Tabasco hot sauce. Edward was a naturalist and conservationist who was born on Avery Island and grew up studying the botanical and wildlife in the area. In the 1920’s, Edward converted his private estate into Jungle Gardens and decorated the grounds with exotic plant life from around the world. He opened up Jungle Gardens to the public in 1935.

I’ve always had an appreciation for the outdoors. Sadly, I haven’t done much exploring outside of the Deep South, mainly Louisiana. I’ve traveled a little bit, just not to do outdoor activities.

Anyway, in 2023, my wife and I traveled to NC/TN and stayed in Maggie Valley. We did some exploring in the area and a few hikes in Smokey Mountain National Park. I know it’s a well-traveled area, but it was a big deal for me. Here’s some photos from our time there. I’ll post more when I get more time.

I want to make an effort to do photography again in 2026. Over the past 5 years, I’ve done very little - and if you’ve known me long enough, you know there was a point in time where you wouldn’t see me without a camera in-hand. I guess it was burn-out, perhaps. As I’m typing this, I’m still searching for inspiration. But photography has been my oldest hobby and the one closest to my heart (along with music), so I have to make an effort.

If you’re still here and seeing my posts, here are some images I’ve taken in the past. There are still some shots from North Carolina that I’m really happy with that still haven’t been posted. I’ll do separate posts for those soon.

Mingus Grist Mill, Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Near Cherokee, NC. 2023

While not visible in this image, there’s a large waterfall coming from the platform where the ladder is. Water was running into the aqueduct from a fork in Mingus Creek, about 200ft up stream. Much of the water dripping from the aqueduct was frozen at the time we visited. More photos of that and more on Mingus Mill later!
