For years I thought I’d never be good enough or make enough to build my own studio..

Like it was just a pipe dream that people laughed about.

And now here I am…. Shooting in the studio I built from the ground up with the 6 figure photography business I thought would never be this successful.

If I can do it, anyone can do it. You just have to start and never give up.

Crazy to think all those years ago I started studio work in my living room!

It was around the Covid pandemic and I just got this wild idea to start shooting studio backdrop work instead of my typical outdoor natural light work.

I had clients just come to my house and I shot while the babies all napped down the hall. And before I knew it, my studio work blew up and after a couple years, I was able to lease a studio! And now years after that, I built my own studio from the ground up on our land!

That’s right! Shot this stunning session in my living room in my first few months of ever shooting studio work!

And you’d never know from the pictures they were shot in my house! That’s the beauty of studio work.

Any room… garage, spare bedroom, living room, dining room…. Can be your studio. All you need is a place to set up your backdrop and your light stand.

And clients didn’t care that they were shooting in my living room, they just trusted the process and knew my work stood for itself!

I started with one single godox light that cost me $160. No expensive gear, no techy stuff.

No lie.

I rolled up my carpet, pushed my furniture back, set up my backdrop stand and my light and had clients change in the bathroom.

And you know what??? No one cared they shot at my house. No one cared that I didn’t have a studio.

You know what they cared about??

The final images. They were beautiful. And that’s all that mattered.

I’m just a mom who was tired of missing out on bedtime stories and dinners and nightly prayers with my babies because I was out chasing golden hour every evening and weekend.

So I decided to change that.

I knew studio work was the key to making my own schedule without depending on the weather or chasing the sun.

But I had no idea where to start.

So I bought a $160 light and just started shooting in my living room.

Now I make 6 figures, built my own studio and I’m home with my babies as much as I want to be. ALL BECAUSE OF STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY.

I want to reach all the moms just like me who are tired of shooting evenings and weekends and missing out on that precious time with our babies.

The headshot pose that never disappoints:

The roll of the hip!

Rolling them on their hip and using the armrests to lean on just instantly gives the pose so much more of an effortless and approachable feel!

It keeps them from looking stiff and lets the hands fall more naturally and also gives more shape to the body.

When your client sits, have them cross their legs and then roll on their hip so that the crossed leg rolls toward the armrest they are leaning on.

Make sure their leg touching the ground is elongated and not tucked under their chair.

One elbow rests on the armrest they are leaned toward and the opposite arm lays over the crossed leg down into the lap. (I like to straighten that elbow so the arm falls more down into the lap so that the elbow does not block the beautiful curve of their hip.

So essentially, they are now sitting more on their hip/thigh rather than their bottoms. This elongated the entire body and created a beautiful line in the photo.
