Earlier this month I greeted a man in my booth who was thumbing through my print bin. He smiled at me and then asked me if many of my works were about death.

A strange, but valid question. (Some of them are.) He had looked at this piece, Drift into the Unknown, and told me how his best friend’s son had died the previous day, at a very young age, and he was still trying to process all the emotions.

We engaged in a beautiful conversation on our spiritual beliefs, that there is no finality to death…but of course that as humans, we still experience the heartbreak and grief around loss.

It was a beautiful exchange. I looked at this piece again through a different lens. While it was not intended to be a piece about death, the white peacock is meant to represent a spirit guide or guardian angel. I can easily see how this interpretation makes sense, especially in this particular situation.

Another lovely reminder that us as artists only bring 50% of the equation to the table when we share our work. The other 50% belongs to the viewer, witnessing the piece with all of their own personal experiences as reference points. Nothing is black and white, right or wrong. It’s always an exchange or energy, narratives and emotion.

30 years ago today I graduated from high school. THIRTY YEARS.

It’s a bit shocking by to think about it, especially since my mind, my consciousness, doesn’t feel any older than that 17 year old sitting there with her portfolio displayed on the wall.

Yes, there’s a maturity to the way I act and behave now, no longer expressing myself through selfish means (yeah, I was a bit of a firecracker back then) but I still feel that thrill and excitement….i still turn into an 8 year old whenever I see strange animals, sing out loud (badly) in public places and hang upside down in aerial classes like that little girl who used to climb up and down the monkey bars.

Since Awesome and I don’t have kids, our physical age isn’t often reflected back to us on a regular basis. Perhaps the real essence of our spirit is ageless. Is timeless.

I hope to still be hanging from my ankles 20 years from now setting the example to all the younger kids in class that we are truly not defined by our age.

That we don’t stop playing because we grow old, that instead we grow old because we stop playing.

Today I’m picking up some paint brushes, like I did back in high school and plan to have some fun. Make some bad art. See where this takes me, if anywhere.

And if I could go back my younger self and give her some advice I would tell her…. Don’t let fear drive your future. Let the love of what you do, what you’re passionate about take the wheel. And never stop having fun.

I think she would be damn proud of where we are now.

I’m officially releasing Chasing the Elusive…
This looks sooo good printed and framed. You’ll find it on display this weekend at in Greenville, SC. Booth 425

This piece sits as a lovely reminder that our dreams are never too big or unattainable…and it’s truly amazing what we can achieve if we shed the fear, and the self-limiting beliefs, and actually go after what we want. The universe smiles upon those who dare to try. ✨

I had the pleasure of joining the other day for an interview on their podcast. It’s so fun sharing my journey in my attempt to eradicate the starving artist myth that keeps most of us creatives living small and exchanging our joy for a career that is safe and unsatisfying. I hope you find some fun nuggets of inspiration.

The Professional Artist podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.

I made it back to aerials today .dragonfly.aerial.co for my first hoop class in forever and a year. I was a little nervous wondering how my body was going to handle bending around a giant metal hoop while dangling in the air. Can I still invert? Can my aging body still handle these crazy maneuvers?

YES! I came out of that class beaming and exhausted. Excited what I can still do when I acknowledge the fear, let it move through me… but not let it control me. I came out of the class feeling so ALIVE!

Thanks, Mistia, for having such a fun space for us to channel our inner circus performer!

We don’t stop playing because we grow old…we grow old because we stop playing.

I was digging through my archive looking for that perfect landscape for a new idea and came across this particular day where I (once again) “made” clouds in my room.
