Earlier this month I greeted a man in my booth who was thumbing through my print bin. He smiled at me and then asked me if many of my works were about death.
A strange, but valid question. (Some of them are.) He had looked at this piece, Drift into the Unknown, and told me how his best friend’s son had died the previous day, at a very young age, and he was still trying to process all the emotions.
We engaged in a beautiful conversation on our spiritual beliefs, that there is no finality to death…but of course that as humans, we still experience the heartbreak and grief around loss.
It was a beautiful exchange. I looked at this piece again through a different lens. While it was not intended to be a piece about death, the white peacock is meant to represent a spirit guide or guardian angel. I can easily see how this interpretation makes sense, especially in this particular situation.
Another lovely reminder that us as artists only bring 50% of the equation to the table when we share our work. The other 50% belongs to the viewer, witnessing the piece with all of their own personal experiences as reference points. Nothing is black and white, right or wrong. It’s always an exchange or energy, narratives and emotion.
