Some scenes don't ask for dramatic skies or towering mountains.

Sometimes it's simply an old cabin tucked quietly among glowing aspens, surrounded by a sea of golden grasses. The kind of place that feels like it has watched countless autumns come and go.

Today I'm trying a little experiment, too.

Facebook allows only a couple of posts each month with an external link before it begins limiting them. I'm curious to see how much reach this post receives compared to the others.

If this image were hanging on your wall for an entire month, would you give it a spot in the calendar?

I'd love to hear your thoughts before the voting closes.

A pair of tire tracks through tall summer grass, heading straight toward Pikes Peak.

Nothing particularly complicated about this one.

Except you can't make this photograph anymore.

The land is being developed.

I have a running ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜-๐—ข-๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€-๐—ง๐—ผ-๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜ filled with compositions I've noticed, imagined, scouted, or told myself I'd get back to when the conditions were right.

More and more of them are disappearing before I do.

Trees grow. Buildings go up. Roads change. Fences appear. Access disappears. Fires happen. Open land becomes something else.

Sometimes you don't realize you're photographing something for the last time until long after you've packed up the camera.

I'm glad I didn't wait on this one.

Sometimes I put photographs into my calendar vote knowing perfectly well they're probably going to lose.

This is one of them.

I included this photograph last year. It didn't get much love.

So naturally, I brought it back. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'll concede that it isn't much of a traditional landscape photograph. It's tight. There isn't some enormous mountain vista stretching toward the horizon.

But I love this image for an entirely different reason:

This is a single exposure.

Look at the water on either side of the fallen log.

On one side, the breeze has transferred its energy into the pond, breaking the reflected autumn color into hundreds of little ripples.

On the other, glass.

My assumption is that the log was acting as a tiny windbreak, sheltering the water immediately behind it and allowing that nearly perfect reflection to form.

Same pond.
Same moment.
Separated by one old log.

One side gets the energy.

The other gets the reflection.

And apparently I'm enough of a nerd that this makes me ridiculously happy.

So, knowing what's actually happening in the photograph...

Or is this poor thing headed for another year near the bottom of the calendar vote? ๐Ÿ˜‚

You can compare The Conservation of Calm, aka Autumn's Physics, with the rest of the 2027 calendar candidates at:

And yes, you can vote for the pretty mountain pictures instead. I'll try not to take it personally. ๐Ÿค“

I have delivered.

Seven years ago, I wrote a blog called Social Media & The 10% Rule. The basic idea was simple: spend less time building someone else's platform and more time building something you actually own.

Fast-forward to 2026.

Facebook put me in jail for three months after a failed verification attempt. My reach has tanked. My Wall barely resembles the place I originally signed up for. Obvious AI-generated nonsense flourishes while actual creators fight for visibility.

And now Facebook would like me to pay monthly for the privilege of giving you a clickable hyperlink to my own website.

๐Ÿ˜‚

So I went back and reread what I wrote in 2019.

Turns out, that guy had a point.

Today's rant is Social Media & The 10% Rule: Seven Years Later.

And because Facebook won't let me make this next part clickable without paying them, you're going to have to kick it old school:

Look for the newest blog.

See what I did there?

I'm using Facebook to point you toward something I actually own.

Maybe I'm finally learning how this 10% thing works.

And the light doesn't particularly care.

I'm not sure how (IG) feels about this habit of mine, but sometimes I find myself roaming the countryside for miles and hours without much of a plan.

On this particular late afternoon, I spotted a thunderstorm building in the distance.

It looked promising.

There was just one problem.

I needed something to put in front of it.

I started running through locations in my head. Eventually, I thought of this old windmill.

Perfect direction. Open countryside. Nothing cluttering the horizon.

There was just one tiny problem.

It was about an hour away.

Off I went.

The photograph tells the rest of the story surprisingly peacefully.

It conveniently leaves out the frantic drive, California stops, repeated glances toward the sky, and the steadily increasing realization that clouds have absolutely no obligation to wait for photographers.

Somehow, we both arrived.

This one is officially a ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ for my 2027 calendar.

Was the hour-long chase worth it?

Voting for the 2027 calendar is still underway, and this photograph has some competition.

I've hidden the trail to the ballot right here:

That's the title of a blog that I wrote years ago. It is the very first blog post on my BLUF blog. I just reread it. Before doing so, I was mad at Facebook. After doing so, I wondered why I was mad at Facebook. I knew what they'd do. They did.

I'll "link" the blog post in the comments, however it will not be "clickable." You'll have to copy & paste it into your browser. Hence the reason for this post and the reason I'll be updating, appending, re-venting, or whatever you want to call it, tomorrow.

I'm a little PO'd...

Oh, the pic. It has nothing to do with anything. But, it's a huge puff ball, huh!? Found it in my yard this evening.

This one doesn't know what season it belongs to.

To most of the country, snow-covered mountains probably make this a winter photograph.

But this is Colorado.

Snow on the high peaks can hang around well into spring, and sometimes summer. Meanwhile, all that perfectly liquid water in the foreground doesn't exactly scream January.

So I've got a problem.

This photograph didn't make it into any of the seasonal categories for my 2027 calendar vote.

If I had to put it somewhere, I'd call it **Spring**.

But maybe I cut this one too soon.

Every calendar starts with too many photographs.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing a handful of candidates, one image at a time. Some will make the final cut. Many won't.

This autumn morning in Grand Teton National Park has always been one of my favorites. The cottonwoods were glowing in the first light while the Tetons quietly faded into the morning haze behind them.

Now comes the hard part.

Deciding which images deserve a place on the wall for an entire year.

If this were your calendar, would this photograph make the cut?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

If you'd like to help shape the 2027 calendar, I've put together a page where you can vote for your favorites.

The address is tucked into the border of the image. I'd love to have your input.
