𝗔 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗘𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗥𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗟𝗔𝗞𝗘

Sometimes the most interesting part of a landscape isn't the landscape itself.

Here's a previously unreleased image from my recent autumn photography trip across Colorado.

While photographing the fog and autumn reflections at Crystal Lake, I noticed a lone wildlife photographer across the water. His attention was fixed on a pair of moose standing somewhere in the distant fog.

I liked the scene enough to turn my camera toward him instead.

A photographer photographing wildlife. Another photographer photographing the photographer. Meanwhile, the moose probably couldn't have cared less. 😆

This is just one of the quieter moments from the trip.

🍂 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗦

Autumn isn't always about the big views.

Sometimes it's worth getting a little closer and looking into the forest instead.

White aspen trunks disappearing into the shadows. Patches of evergreen hiding among them. A whole lotta gold overhead... and even a few stubborn reds hanging around.

Colorado autumn gets plenty of attention for the grand landscapes, but there's an entirely different world hiding between the trees.

Sometimes you just have to look in.

🏔️ 𝗗𝗢𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗘

A crisp Colorado morning at Crystal Lake.

The first sunlight was just beginning to kiss the mountain peaks while a cool layer of fog settled over the valley below.

And the water?

Almost perfectly still.

For a few minutes, Crystal Lake turned into a giant mirror and gave me the whole scene twice. 😁

Morning light. Fog. Mountains. Reflections.

𝗧𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲... 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂!

There was a time when my 2027 Landscape Photography Calendar didn't have a cover. Heck, it didn't even have any selected photographs! Just a reveal date and a bunch of candidates.

Yet, some of you pre-ordered anyway.

Maybe it was because you'd purchased a calendar in the past. Maybe you'd seen the candidates and trusted that the final selections would be worth it. Whatever your reason, you placed an order without knowing exactly what you'd receive.

Those early orders mean more than you might realize. As an individual photographer, they help me gauge interest, plan production, order supplies, and determine quantities. More importantly, they give me the confidence to keep doing this.

You supported something before it was even finished. That's not something I take lightly.

To everyone who took that early leap of faith...

📸 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡. 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗛𝗦.

Take a look at these three images.

Same location. Same composition. Same foreground. Same background.

But where does your eye go?

In the first, I focused on the autumn trees in the foreground.

In another, I focused on the distant mountains.

And in the third, I combined the two so both are sharp.

None of those choices is necessarily right or wrong. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁.

If the autumn color is my subject, allowing the mountains to fall slightly out of focus can help keep your attention forward.

If the mountains are my subject, I can do exactly the opposite.

And if I believe both are important to the story, I can use the tools available to me to keep both sharp.

Depth of field isn't always about getting as much of the photograph in focus as possible. Sometimes it's about deciding what **doesn't** need to be.

So, which do you prefer: foreground, background, or both? 👇

🍂 𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗠𝗡 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗚

This was one of those mornings when the scene seemed to change every few minutes.

Fog would roll through, hide portions of the mountainside, drift away, and then come sloshing back through again. Meanwhile, the autumn colors and nearly still water were doing a pretty good job of keeping me occupied.

I wasn't the only one enjoying the morning, either. 🦆

One of these images has **one duck** hiding in the scene.

Another has **seven**.

And yes, I counted them. 😂

🍂 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗗𝗔𝗬

I've photographed this little cabin before, and it's easy to understand why this spot has become so popular.

This year, I was hoping for autumn color, fresh snow on the mountains, and maybe a little atmosphere to pull everything together.

The frustrating part? The conditions were pretty darn good the day before I arrived... and the day after I left. 😂

The day I was actually there? Not quite what I'd hoped for.

That's landscape photography. You watch the forecasts, make your plans, drive the miles, and Mother Nature reminds you who's actually in charge.

Still, those autumn colors weren't exactly difficult to look at. 🍂

Maybe next year I'll pick the right day. 😀
