Unique Photos from Expedition to Galapagos Expand Our Selection of Limited-Edition, Gallery-Quality Prints

In April of this year, I joined a group of 19 adventure travelers on an expedition to the Galapagos Islands, led by Focus Relief board member and award-winning photographer Robert Salisbury Knight.

My participation in the expedition was made possible by the generous sponsorship from an anonymous family that liked the work being done by Focus Relief – particularly using the proceeds from our Antarctica photos and subsequent coffee table book to help end hunger – and wanted to see that work continue.

Much like Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands are an amazing place filled with unique wildlife, such as Marine and Land Iguanas, Giant Tortoises, and Blue-footed Bo***es, to name a few. It also offers a fascinating history, such as Darwin's theories on evolution, tortoise-plundering pirates, and the work being done today to protect and restore the Islands from the damage done by invasive flora and fauna.

I was extremely honored to participate in such a remarkable adventure as the Galapagos Islands are much more beautiful and mesmerizing than I ever imagined. I hope this feeling comes across in our gallery of photos.

As always, when you purchase our limited-edition prints or e-gift cards for friends and family, all profits go directly to local food banks. Together, we've helped provide more than 200,000 meals to those in our communities that have traditionally been the most vulnerable – children, the elderly, the poor.

From all of us at Focus Relief, when you invest in art and humanity, everyone wins.

At Focus Relief Photography for Charity, 2022 was a record year. Through your investment in our limited-edition (and sold out!) coffee table book, “Antarctica – A Photographic Expedition,” along with our gallery-quality photography, we were able to provide more than 110,000 meals via food banks to those in our communities that have traditionally been the most vulnerable – children, the elderly, the poor.

Together, we nearly tripled the amount of meals provided in 2021 (40,000).

We do all this through word-of-mouth, social media and volunteerism. No money is spent on advertising or salaries.

Nearly one in seven Americans suffer from food insecurity – the lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle. The past few years have been challenging for many in the United States. Because of COVID, 40 percent of Americans have experienced food insecurity for the first time.

At Focus Relief Photography for Charity, we believe photography has the power to make an impact in many different ways. Our mission is to use the art of photography as a means to help communities end hunger and food insecurity in the United States. When you invest in our limited-edition, gallery-quality photography, all profits go to community food banks.

In addition, our purpose is to inspire others – particularly the youth – to apply their energy, skill and passion to benefit humanity, even if it is making a difference to just one person. Whether it is a God-given talent or just an activity someone likes to do, it doesn’t take much to give back. We found ours through photography. If someone can bake, read, write, speak, sing, dance, donate, or simply volunteer their time, we encourage them to put it to use for the greater good.

Together, we are making a difference – putting beauty on your walls and food on someone’s table.

Let’s see what we can do in 2023!

In peace,

“How many boxes is that?” asked the dock worker at the local post office.

“Hopefully, enough to provide more than 40,000 meals through local food banks,” was my reply.

The impact of making “Antarctica – A Photographic Expedition” is far reaching. Yes, there is dramatic photography and intimate stories wrapped up in a beautiful, full-sized, 92-page coffee table book. However, the real story – our purpose – is to use the art of photography as a means to help communities end hunger and food insecurity in the United States.

Why the U.S.? At least one in seven Americans experiences hunger and food insecurity. In Los Angeles County (where I reside), it’s one in five people. Because of COVID, 40 percent of Americans have experienced food insecurity for the first time.

At Focus Relief, it is our goal to make a difference in our community and helping those facing hunger and food insecurity issues by using our photography skills we’ve developed over the years. In short, we align our actions with our values.

In 2021 – in the midst of a global pandemic – through word-of-mouth and social media, sales of our photos helped food banks to provide more than 40,000 meals to those in our communities that have traditionally been the most vulnerable – children, the elderly, the poor. No money was spent on advertising. In 2022, with the sale of our book, we intend to double the number of meals provided in 2021.

All proceeds from the sale of "Antarctica - A Photographic Expedition" go directly to community food banks.

On the “Antarctica” book front, we have an exciting update for you plus some important news on our pre-order deadline.

If you pre-ordered a book (or three), thank you for your support. We spent most of last night putting USPS Priority Mail mailing labels on boxes. All boxes are ready to go!

While we did announce that the books would be available and ready for delivery on December 1, due to supply chain issues, we got word last night that the arrival of the books would not happen until later this afternoon, Friday, December 2.

What that means for those that pre-ordered, no worries. We plan to start putting books in their respective Priority Mail boxes over the weekend and have them at the post office by Monday, just as we originally planned.

For those that were waiting to buy a book but for some reason didn’t think it was actually going to happen, we are going to extend our pre-order period through this coming Monday. That means we still have around two dozen copies remaining from the original 250 we’ve made – and you can still pre-order the book for the pre-order price of $100. Starting Tuesday, December 6, however, the price of “Antarctica – A Photographic Expedition” will return to its list price of $125.

If you haven’t pre-ordered yet, time is running out. By this time next week, people will be all over social media, sharing their excitement with photos of the book in their hands or on their coffee tables. This will also make an amazing holiday gift, but only while it is still available.

Most importantly, all proceeds from the sale of "Antarctica - A Photographic Expedition," go directly to community food banks.

“Antarctica – A Photographic Expedition,” is a beautiful, full-sized, 92-page coffee table book, filled with nearly 100 one-of-a-kind photos along with intimate stories from this transformative journey, as my camera and I traveled to the ends of the world – literally – in Focus Relief’s quest to end hunger in the U.S.

Thank you all for supporting our coffee table book, Antarctica – A Photographic Expedition. Pre-order sales of this limited collector's edition have exceeded our expectations, as we are on pace to sell all 250 copies BEFORE the book is scheduled to arrive from the printer and is mailed out the first week of December.

Antarctica – A Photographic Expedition is more than just “mesmerizing photography with a compelling story.” It is a labor of love, filled with a true sense of adventure and nearly 100 original photos – many seen within its 92 pages for the first time. It is full sized – 11.5"x11.5" – using premium-weighted lustre photo paper with just a hint of gloss, along with a cloth-wrapped and foil-stamped hard cover with a vibrant dust jacket. You will not be disappointed.

As part of our mission at Focus Relief Photography for Charity, all proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to community food banks.

Pre-order now for delivery before the holidays. Only 250 copies of this collector’s edition will be made available. After December 1, once this book has arrived from our printer and is ready for distribution, this collector’s edition will return to its list price of $125.

Special thanks goes out to our committed editorial crew, led by our editor Margaret Treanor Frey with great support by Mark Frey, Beth Phelan Stokes, Jim Roberts and Gil Tisnado.

For our first book, it was important for us to do it right – to encapsulate the experience simply for you. We envision it to be a work of art to share with friends and loved ones for a lifetime of enjoyment. You will not be disappointed.

With a limited run of 250 books, pre-order now for the holidays.

All proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to community food banks.

In this intimate collector's edition book, Focus Relief founder Tarik Trad takes you on a transformative journey to the ends of the world – literally – in Focus Relief’s quest to end hunger in the U.S.

Welcome to Photo Tuesday. Our Photo of the Week - "Hummingbird in Flight" - Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards, which comes in handy when enjoying the nectar from lavender blooms as shown here. Weighing less than a nickel, these incredibly fast and beautiful creatures with translucent colors can be quite difficult to photograph. From our "A Pandemic Is for the Birds" series. www.focusrelief.com/phototuesday.
