28 ניסן 5784 יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה

Today we set aside to honor the millions of lives lost in the Holocaust. We remember their lives and the entire worlds that, with them, are also forever gone.

So too we remember those righteous among nations who protected European Jews during that dark time in history when hate manifested into reality attempted to annihilate a people.

Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, preserves the history so that we will never again see such destruction among humanity.

Norman Gersham's documentation of those Albanian families who sheltered and fed those escaping sure death are but a few of the righteous honored at Yad Vashem.

Most were ordinary people who did not think they were doing anything heroic but did what was to them, simply human.

Norman's joy at discovering these families and hearing their stories held deep meaning for him as he believed in the best of humanity shining through as possibility of what we can always be.

Below is a link for more history of history we remember today. Norman Gershman's documentation is but a part of the many righteous who set an example for us all.

Norman Gershman's life work was about finding the best in people. He loved life and sought joy in our faces. He saw it in the way we cared for each other or in the way we laughed. Most of all he saw it in our eyes with what he called the basis of connection, EYE CONTACT.

Today, in honor and memoriam on Holocaust Day, the archive starts a series commemorating the Albanians whose stories Norman so eloquently documented -- stories of lives that demonstrate the very best in us during a time of darkness.

Through the entire war, Albanians from the top national offices to village churches or mosques, in cities and farms, every Jew who entered the country was given safety until the storm of hatred had passed. A nation risked their lives to shelter strangers -- and all survived.

Albania was a bright spot in a continent of sorrow. It doesn't remove the ever billowing waves of loss from 6 million Jews to 13, 55, 150 million dead after all was tallied.  But it does give humanity an example of hope and possibility that maybe some day we will do better.

Today the archive celebrates Norman Gershman's birthday.

From intimate observations of family moments to his formal work documenting the last days of the former Soviet Union or the Albanian families who opened their homes to Jews escaping the Holocaust, his humanitarian photography memorializes our ability to connect with each other and the hearts capability of expansion.

The archive is not just a collection of superb images beautifully created. Additionally manifest is the development of Gershman’s unique formalized concept of EYE CONTACT – the moment of human connection. This dominant theme in his work not only shows the viewer the best of who we can be and the best of what we can do, his work reminds us of the love we can offer and receive in our every day lives and challenges us to rise to the best we can be as we meet the difficult times presented to every generation.

So today we honor the man who gave his heart to those he loved and gave the world a legacy of knowing the world can be better through our own connections and actions.

Happy Birthday Norman!

August is the height of vacation season. Whether a family car trip in the former Soviet Union, a multigenerational gathering in New Jersey or a father and son cooling off with a city street hydrant the underlying joy comes from being together. Photographs are the physical memory of that joy. As Norman Gershman wrote, ‘With each photograph theer are memories. Some of the images I consider my best work. Some are full of nostalgia for friends, family, places and lovers.’ Whether a world renowned photographer or a candid snapshot taken with a phone, why do we photograph?

They call it love. Happy Summer from all of us at the Norman Gershman Archive.
