Red Fox

The Red Fox is an adaptable predator found along the edges of woodland, pasture, and agricultural land across Southeast Kansas.

This individual was observed moving through edge habitat, where cover and open ground meet. These transitional areas provide hunting opportunities for small mammals, insects, and birds.

As a mid-level predator, the Red Fox plays a role in maintaining balance within local ecosystems, particularly in landscapes shaped by both natural and human activity.

About 5 pm this evening, Dearing Kansas Fire Department was dispatched to a fuel spill near CR 2000 and CR 3900 in Dearing.

The gas station has been undergoing improvements, and the source of the spill seems to originate from the construction area just north of the fire station. It is estimated that approximately 300 gallons have spilled.

Montgomery County, Montgomery County S.O. KS, KDHE have responded to the scene. A hazmat team is en route.

If possible, find a different route past the area. CR 2000 in Dearing will be closed for some time as the cleanup proceeds.

Honey Bee

Honey bees are a common pollinator across Southeast Kansas, frequently observed moving between flowering plants in both natural and managed landscapes.

This individual was observed foraging for nectar and pollen, contributing to the pollination of surrounding vegetation. Pollination supports plant reproduction, seasonal bloom cycles, and the broader food web.

While often associated with agriculture, pollinators like the honey bee are also active participants in local ecosystems where flowering plants are present.

Citizens gathered at 11am at El charro and proceeded to the corner of 11th and Walnut in Coffeyville to protest the arrest and later ICE detainment of Salvador Bermudez-Herrea.

The signage displayed referred to a displeasure with ICE, 287(g) agreements between ICE and local enforcement, and to bring Sal home. A local businessman and father.

Various county and Coffeyville social media groups have more about this story.

Blue-winged Teal

Blue-winged Teal are small dabbling ducks commonly associated with shallow wetlands, ponds, and flooded edges across Southeast Kansas.

This individual was observed feeding along the littoral zone, where water meets land — an area that supports a high concentration of plant life, insects, and aquatic organisms.

Waterfowl like the Blue-winged Teal rely on these shallow systems for feeding and seasonal movement, making intact wetland habitat an important component of the regional ecosystem.

Dickcissel

The Dickcissel is a grassland songbird strongly associated with native prairie and open agricultural fields across Southeast Kansas.

Males are often seen perched on fence posts or tall grasses, delivering persistent songs during breeding season. Their presence reflects the availability of open grassland habitat — a landscape type that has declined significantly over time.

Grassland birds like the Dickcissel depend on intact prairie systems and responsible land management practices.
