A Harbor seal pup comes in for a close inspection! They often display a shy fleeting curiosity toward divers, but occasionally you get one who is not shy at all and they are the best! It had been quite awhile since I had a good harbor seal interaction before yesterday.

Yesterday morning I drove to Moss Landing to buy local halibut for dinner, I ran into Chase Dekker in the parking lot who told me to go home and get my camera, there were very active Orcas hunting sea lions just outside of the harbor. I did just that, what a day, just one of many reasons I love living on the Monterey Bay!

A busy evening at Brooks Falls in July 2022! Sixteen brown bears fish for sockeye salmon while a family of common mergansers casually cross the river behind them. Bear Cam goes live this morning and I’m excited to get a sneak peak of how this season is shaping up! I am looking forward to returning to Brooks Camp in just over a month!

Happy World Oceans Day! Kelp forests are one of my favorite places in our oceans that I have experienced so far. Glad I was able to peer through this beautiful dense Southern California kelp forest at Channel Islands National Park with Michael recently.

A Leather star (Dermasterias imbricata) adorns a coraline algae encrusted rocky reef 60 feet beneath the canopy of kelp. Glad to be able to share views like this last Friday with Sage Ono.

A sleepy sand-covered Galápagos sea lion rests on Mosquera Islet, a small strip of land tucked between Isla Baltra and Isla Seymour Norte. One of the largest sea lion colonies in the Galápagos is fortunate to call this stunning place home.

A large canvas print of this image hangs beside our bed at home as a daily reminder of what peace and harmony in the natural world looks like. This morning when I woke up and looked over and my sleepy friend I decided it was time to share this image in celebration of Earth Day. I ask that you take a moment today to think if there is a small change you can make in your life to help ensure places and animals like this continue to exist for generations to come.

Manta Ray Madness! One of the most touristy yet most amazing dives I have ever done. It seems like 30-35 Manta Rays flying overhead for an hour is enough to forget that 70 other divers are kneeling around the same circle of rocks in the sand watching Manta Rays feast on plankton attracted to countless lights placed on the bottom. The bar was set extremely high for Rebecca's first night dive! How many Mantas can you count in this image?

Double Macrocystis. As one of the fastest growing organisms on Earth you can literally almost see individual bulbs and blades separating from the apical meristem on Giant Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) as it reaches for the surface. Hopefully its fast growth rate will be key to its recovery in Monterey once the conditions are right.

A Black-and-yellow rockfish, Leather Star, and Fish-eating anemone share this beautiful home on a shallow patch of reef beneath my favorite underwater forest. Not sure I have any good Black-and-yellow rockfish shots so I am happy to add this my collection! They seem to be less abundant than other species and certainly more skittish.
