I have had a male Winter Wren (Troglodytes hiemalis) living in the woods behind the property I rent and it regularly sings it’s heart out trying to find love.

One day I decided to go into the patch of woods I heard his song from and hid in a photography blind I own. With time I was able to capture images of the bird as he sang and moved about his territory.

A Sea of Floating Sapphire.

Fun fact: the reason maybe icebergs or glaciers appear blue is because as the suns rays hit these thick blocks of ice, long wavelengths (more reddish colors) are absorbed and the shirt wavelengths (bluish colors) are reflected back for us to perceive via vision!

A view across the pond.

One way to easily play around with the effect of light on your subject is to visit it at different times of the day. My previous photo was when light was shooting through the clouds but here the first image was taken during a rain shower, and the second during full cloud cover. I also used this time to play around with foreground objects and depth of field.

Autumn in Hirundo.

Last weekend the foliage was at peak but there were also some showers in the area. As the storms cleared and the sunlight started to break through, I hurried over to Hirundo to photograph the red cabin on their pond. The light was hitting the golden leaves of poplars and birches and brought such a beautiful element to image.

Fishing and a Show.

Some of the best fall foliage viewing was where Birch Stream flows into the Stillwater River. As a stand-alone this view was impressive, but I felt this duo of fishermen really adds to the image. For me, it just feels like authentic Maine! I lucked out that they were there when I arrived to photograph the area!
