I’m a little late with this post and after getting a call this last week from a family member who had their first tick experience, I best share some of my story again. Because, I didn’t go through all of this to forget about it. I want to help people and hopefully you can take something from this to help you for your next adventure.
I was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease in 2021. I was bit by a tick and developed a bullseye rash in the spring of 2017. I went several years before it became a chronic issue. And if you thought western Washington doesn’t have ticks, sorry to break it to you but we do. I’ve been a vet tech for 15 years and I’ve pulled ticks off several cats and dogs that stayed within my county.
I share this to spread awareness, not to create fear. I’ve spent years coming to peace living with this and even though it caused me to put my camera down for a bit, I’m grateful I can share this with my clients and fellow creatives.
A few things I would do if I were going out in the woods or a grassy field to do a session:
•Spray your clothing and shoes with a tick repellent (I’ll let you research what you feel comfortable using)
•Wear long pants and tuck your pants into your socks
•Bring a lint roller and lint roll before getting in your car
•Pack a tick remover kit (Amazon sells these)
•As soon as you get home, put those clothes in the dryer on high heat
•Do a head to toe tick check (bonus points if you have someone who can help you and check your scalp!)
•If you’re bringing Fido, make sure they’re on a tick protection and check your dog for ticks BEFORE you get in the car
*If you get bit by a tick, save it and send it in to be tested. Not all ticks are sick, but best to know if they are so you can take the steps to protect yourself.
I meant to share this in May for Lyme Disease Awareness. Better late than never 😉💚
