A tiny sunbather perched upon an old tree stump, soaking up the sunshine while keeping one curious eye on the photographer who dared interrupt his peaceful little kingdom. 🦎☀️🌿

🐍Meet the Brown Snake (Dekay’s brown snake)—a tiny, nonvenomous Georgia native that often goes unnoticed because of its small size and earthy brown coloring.

A few fun facts about this little noodle:

🌿 Tiny but helpful: Brown snakes are usually less than a foot long and spend much of their time hiding beneath leaves, logs, rocks, and other ground cover.

🐌 Garden helper: Their diet includes slugs, snails and other small invertebrates, making them a helpful little predator in the ecosystem.

👅 That tongue has a job! That adorable little tongue isn't actually “smelling” the air the way we do. The forked tongue collects microscopic chemical particles, which are transferred to the Jacobson’s organ in the roof of the mouth. This helps the snake figure out what's happening around it.

🩶 Completely nonvenomous: Brown snakes are not one of Georgia's venomous species. Georgia has 47 native snake species, and 40 are nonvenomous.

Nature photography is so much more fun when your subject has personality ✨

Just before the dive. 🌿💚

Perched low over the marsh, this little Green Heron paused for just a moment—body tucked, wings ready, and eyes locked on whatever caught its attention beneath the surface.

There she was, a young mama deer tucked quietly into the foliage, watching me just as curiously as I was watching her. 🦌🤎
