At the urging of a few friends, I planned to photograph traditional Back-to-School mini sessions this year, complete with a desk and themed setup, but when it came time to shoot, I realized it simply isn’t who I am as an artist. My best work happens when I have time to connect with the people in front of my camera, to talk with them, let them settle in, learn a little about who they are, and wait for those natural, organic expressions that can’t be rushed or manufactured. Props, themes and quick mini sessions can be wonderful, but they’ve never really been the heart of my work. So instead of the school desk, I created this. Simple, honest and connected. I want my portraits to be about the person, not the theme, and to create images with depth, emotion and permanence that still feel meaningful long after a particular season has passed. Sometimes being true to your brand means recognizing what you do best and giving yourself permission to stay there.
