What I learned this week.

When I'm culling & editing images I often come across some goofy expressions or wacky positions from the dogs. Now sometimes I'm hesitant to post them, as, I always want to show your dogs in their natural, heroic, confident and majestic state.

But here's what I learned - y'all like those goofy images as I see the images that people choose to download...so lesson learned - I'll always include some wacky images in galleries when I find them.....

This majestic pup is VEKTR!

IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT
For my Dock Diving folks! Splash Town

Quick note before I dive in: if you already pre-ordered or Requested a gallery, you're all set — you can skip the rest of this. This one's for everyone else.

I want to be honest about something, because it explains a change I'm making.

When you see me at the pool with the camera up, that's maybe a tenth of the actual job. The part nobody sees is everything that comes after. I haul home thousands of images from a single weekend — over 12,000 this past one — and then I organize them dog by dog, edit every keeper by hand, and post the galleries online, all on the hope that someone wants them.

And I don't shoot-and-burn. I know plenty of photographers dump the card, post everything, and move on, and honestly there's nothing wrong with that — it's just never been how I work. If your dog is going to launch off a dock, I want that photo to be right. So I sit with each one, cropping, color-correcting, and adjusting until it's the best version of that moment it can be.

Here's the hard part. I've always done all of that on spec — building a full gallery for every single dog whether or not anyone ever planned to buy a photo. For years that was fine. But at 12,000+ images a weekend, spending days editing galleries that never get opened has caught up with me. If I want to keep doing this the careful way — and keep my sanity — I have to put my editing hours where they actually matter.

So here's the change, going forward:

If you'd like me to build your dog's gallery, there's now a $30 gallery creation fee — and it's really a credit, not a charge. That $30 includes one full-resolution image of your choice from the finished gallery. It's the same $30 I'd charge for a single image anyway, so you're not paying a penny extra — you're just letting me know you genuinely want the photos, and picking up your first one in the process.

And I stand behind the work completely: if you go through your finished gallery and honestly can't find one image you love, just tell me and I'll refund the $30, no questions asked.

That's it. This was never about the money — it's about being able to give the dogs whose people really want these photos the time and care they deserve. Thank you for understanding, and for trusting me with your pups. That part still means the world to me.

I'm planning to be at Splash Town on Friday and Saturday for those attending.

Here's my #1 tip for getting great pictures! I'll post a pre-order link soon too.

Want to know how to get the absolute BEST dock diving pictures of your dog? I'll tell you exactly what works — straight from the photographer.

Step 1: Pre-order.

I'm not going to pretend it doesn't matter — it does, and here's the honest reason why. When I know you're buying images, I shoot more, I edit longer, and I build you a bigger gallery so you have more to choose from. That's not favoritism, that's just where my time and attention naturally goes.

Step 2: Splash more.
The more times your dog hits the water, the more chances I have to capture something incredible. More splashes = more pictures. It's that simple.

Step 3: Say hi.
When you get to the event, stop by and tell me "Hey Dave, I pre-ordered!" I know a lot of you by face now, but on a long day with not enough coffee, a quick word helps me make sure I've got you covered.

Step 4: Ask for what you want.
If you see me hanging around between events, come over! Want portraits? Ask. Want shake-off shots? Tell me. Got an idea for a fun pic? Let's try it. The more you talk to me, the harder I'll work to get you something amazing.

That's it. No secrets, no gimmicks — just the truth about how to walk away with pictures you'll love.

See you at the dock! 🐕💦

I hear this a lot in my pet photography groups, workshops, and other events where there are other pet photographers. They say my prices are too cheap.

I’m curious is there anyone out there who has decided not to book me for a session because they think I don’t charge enough?

I’m gonna guess the answer is probably no but the argument is is that when you have a high level of quality and you don’t charge enough for it people may think that your quality is lacking because you’re not charging more.
