World, meet Atticus. His newborn session was on September 11. It was my first since the beginning of Covid. He was a very touchy little guy. He especially did not want me to touch his fingers! He made the best faces though.

Happy National Hugging Day!! I just learned (from Wikipedia) that Hugging Day was created by Kevin Zaborney. The first Hugging Day was celebrated on January 21, 1986 in Clio, Michigan, USA. I can't wait until I can hug my parents! I'll be giving my little ones extra hugs today to compensate.

Ugh. It feels like the weeks are so long these days. Yet I look back and time just seems to fly. Apart from the craziness of my personal life, I spent this week painting some of my newborn sessions from 2019. I have been a tad derelict on my class work. Which I really need to get caught up on so I may not post again for a few days.
So here is one of the paintings I finished this week.

If I can give one piece of advice for anyone looking to have newborn photographs taken, it would be to verify that the photographer has had newborn safety training. I cannot stress this enough! We handle the most delicate and vulnerable beings on the Earth. They deserve to be treated as such. I've had three babies of my own but actually posing newborns for photos is completely different than day to day handling of a newborn. The photographer should know how to comfort a baby, have extreme patience to allow them to relax fully. There are some poses that can lead to hyperextension of joints or danger of the baby falling if not executed properly. I have both on-line and in-person safety training. I am planning on more in the (hopefully) near future. I am a Qualified Newborn Photographer through APNPI. One requirement is taking a newborn safety course. I am also certified in infant CPR.
I finished the painting that was on my monitor on my post from Monday. What a beautiful baby girl!

I was trying to find ideas for what to post today and I found out today is the unofficial Clean Off Your Desk Day! So I cleaned up my so-called "desk" (which is really just a table in my basement) and snapped a pic with my phone. It is already making me feel better to have a more organized and less cluttered work space. So, everyone, clean off your desks! You also get a sneak peek at what I'm working on right now.

I often get asked why I tend to hold newborn sessions in the morning. Here is why:
Newborns sleep around 8-9 hours during the day and about 8 hours at night. Newborns wake to feed anywhere from every 2-4 hours. This can vary tremendously! Babies typically have their days and nights reversed, sleeping more during the day and waking more at night.
When my children were babies, I would use an app to track their sleep. All three of them would have a very sleepy period in the mid to late morning. When I started newborn photography, I found that to be typical of most newborns. They have a sleepy morning and a little more wakeful afternoon.
I am not a newborn sleep expert. I have just found this to be true through experience with my own babies, research and education in newborn sleep (to both benefit me with my own newborns and to set my sessions with the best chance of success and safety), and observations with client sessions at different times of the day.
To sum up, on average, newborns do tend to sleep longer and deeper in the mid to late morning. I try to do everything in my power to set up a successful session that will give my clients many beautiful images if their sleepy, peaceful baby.

I absolutely love photographing and painting newborns, infants and children! I have spent years studying and practicing photography. I have specialized in newborns for about 3 years. I have spent the past 1.5 years taking courses on digital painting. I cannot wait to offer my paintings as a beautiful, unique product. No one else in Missoula offers this as far I know. I am constantly learning. I take several courses throughout the year and I try to include at least one in-person, hands-on workshop each year. This keeps me up to date on technology and safety methods. I absolutely love to learn. There is no substitute for a proper education, especially when working with newborns, where safety is paramount. The image below was one I took while at an in-person workshop with the Amazing Kelly Brown in October of 2019. I was unable to attend an in-person workshop in 2020 due to Covid-19. I am hoping to attend one this summer, keeping my fingers crossed!

I am hoping to start sessions again soon. I have been spending this past year since March educating myself further on photography, business, newborns, and digital painting. My main goal is to give every one of my clients a unique, stress-free experience from start to finish. The product will be a beautiful, unique, custom product created to display beautifully in their homes. From the in-person pre-consult to the delivery of the product, I will be there to guide you through the process. I am working on fine-tuning my business workflow to make sure I will give the best experience and high quality, custom art to display in their home. We are currently planning a dedicated studio space in my home for sessions. This will enable me to keep the area exceptionally clean and comfortable for my clients and families. So much is changing, all for the better, even my logo!

2020 was such a long and messed up year. I am currently spending this winter dreaming about long, warm summers camping, fishing, hiking, and throwing rocks in the river with my family. I am planning many camping trips this summer and hopefully spending a lot of time with my parents, who I haven’t been able to see for months (apart from Zoom). We’re almost two weeks past solstice and the days are getting longer, yay!
Here is a photo of my family during a camping trip at the Big Hole this past summer.

New Year's Eve...Finally. It has been a colossally horrible year. It started, for me, in January when our dog passed away. That wasn't the only death in my family this year. Needless to say it has been rough.
So, normally I would be posting images from client portrait sessions throughout the year. However, this year I haven't held a session since March, due to Covid-19. I did win three international photography awards, which was exciting.
My photo collage this year contains three images from sessions and the rest are paintings and our sweet dog.
Happy New Year's Eve everyone!! Here's hoping next year is much better!
