Astor Place Subway

Ok, so this is not a picture of a puppy or a spring morning (dew on a leaf). Some may think it closer to “serial killer on way to work in the morning,” and thus of interest only to a limited cohort. But I like images of (1) solitary figures, (2) stark architecture with lines and angles, and (2) Astor Place, so this worked for me.
I will have 15 pictures in a show in the Soho Photo Gallery, called Hidden Figures, from September 9 to October 4. Those pictures can be seen under Exhibitions at my (all too lonely) website, jamesmpeaslee.com, which also has an artist bio and other work.

Bus Rider, Flushing Queens, 2026

Similar to the one I just posted, another elegant woman in afternoon light. This time, it is a bus rider in Flushing Queens (I get around). For more, look at my (all too lonely) website, jamesmpeaslee.com.

Please note that I am a former wall street tax lawyer. So for those of you similarly situated (broadly speaking) who are thinking of a (more) creative future, hold fast, there is hope. And feel free to contact me; I can walk you through the transition, which for me involved six weeks in Missoula, MT.

Woman in Afternoon Sun, Madison Avenue, 2026

In a recent posting, I mentioned the joy of finding exceptional beauty in the most quotidien of locales. Well, this isn’t so quotidien because it is Madison Avenue; but still, it was a casual pedestrian, whose inherent beauty was enhanced, as she strolled across the thoroughfare, by the afternoon son. For more, look at my (all too lonely) website, jamesmpeaslee.com.

Looking Out a Window, W Train, 2026

It is surely life affirming that you can find exceptional beauty in the most quotidien of locales, in this case on the elevated W train (confusingly, part of the NYC “subway” system), hurtling north through Astoria, Queens. The woman seems lost in her thoughts as she gazes outward. I loved the light on her skin, the geometry of the subway car, and the mere suggestion of buildings passing by in the (deliberately overexposed) background.

Please note that I am a former tax lawyer with a wall street firm, so for those of you similarly situated who are thinking of a (more) creative future, hold fast, there is hope. And feel free to contact me; I can walk you through the transition.

Elegance on Ed Koch Bridge

Steel, cables, rivets, repetition—and then a single figure whose movement transforms the structure into a stage. I was drawn to the tension between the bridge’s rigid geometry and the effortless grace of a passerby. For more, please take a look at my website jamesmpeaslee.com . Please note that I am a former tax lawyer with a wall street firm, so for those of you similarly situated who are thinking of the future, hold fast, there is hope.

As anyone who has read my photograph titles knows, I believe in straightforward reporting. So, this is called Elegant Woman at the Parfumerie. In addition to being clearly accurate, the title gives me the opportunity to use the word parfumerie, which is making its debut in this space. For more, try my website, jamesmpeaslee.com.

This is called (cleverly enough) Man in Light From a Window. It was taken at the Whitney Museum last week (with my new Nikon Z8 camera—I finally ditched the DSLR for mirrorless). It demonstrates that men can look contemplative, although possibly he is just bored. For more, try my website, jamesmpeaslee.com.

This is called Waves on a Japanese Shore, although it was taken in Chelsea (Manhattan). I thought it had a bit of a Japanese print flavor, hence the name. It is also my first diptych. Could a triptych be in my future?

I have one picture in a juried exhibition called Intimacy, which is now up through May 16 at the Soho Photo Gallery (539 West 23rd Street).
