- Yellowstone Falls is taller than Niagara Falls! The Lower Falls plunges 308 feet (94 meters), nearly twice the height of Niagara Falls.
- There are two major waterfalls. The Upper Falls drops about 109 feet, while the Lower Falls makes the spectacular 308-foot plunge into the canyon below.
- The canyon’s colorful walls helped inspire Yellowstone’s name. Yellow, orange, and red hues come from volcanic rocks altered by hot water and geothermal activity.
- Rainbows are a regular treat on sunny days. Sunlight refracts and reflects inside tiny water droplets in the mist, creating brilliant rainbows when the viewing angle is right.
- The Yellowstone River carved this spectacular canyon. Over time, the river has cut through volcanic rock to create the dramatic Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

I booked the Airbnb for the view. I didn’t know it came with management.

He showed up at dusk, a pale shape in the branches of the tree outside my window, glowing in the last light like someone had left a lamp on. At 2 a.m., when I got up and peeked through the curtain, he was still there, a white silhouette against the stars, facing the Badlands.

In the morning, I found him on my car.

Not near it. On it. Standing on the roof with his train draped down the back window, like the rental had come with a hood ornament. I stepped outside with my coffee and my camera.

After a while he hopped down and wandered to the edge of the ridge, probably headed off to find breakfast, and I got my shot, with the rolling praries of the Badlands behind him.

I’ve photographed a lot of wildlife. But I’d never been hosted by it before.
