From the April Casket Arts Second Saturday pop-up portrait session in Studio 414. Ariel is a semi-regular visitor during open studios going back a few years, and always shows up with a great new look that needs to be preserved. Two-light setup with 22" beauty dish for the key light. I really like this black and white version, a classic look with this lighting style.

Morning at the cabin with the avian choir. Use the Merlin app to identify the birds we are hearing here. This is a partial list from a screen grab, many more below the screen view. A nice way to wake up in the morning if you like waking up at 4:30 a.m.!

I don't use any cookie-cutter lighting or posing for my studio sessions. As illustrated in some samples from a recent collaboration in Studio 414 with Chika Chan, I start with the intended use for the photos, the look the subject is going for, and the subject's personality; then I build the lighting and pose concepts by adding, modifying, moving or removing lighting to achieve the desired effect.

Photo 1, for example, is a three-light setup that is flattering for Chika's talent headshots- minimizes shadows on the face but still accentuates her cheekbones, jawline and eyes. Picture 2, a five-light setup, accentuates musculature for fitness and athletics. Photos 4-6 use just two lights; it is a lighting scheme intended to introduce a little more drama, mystery and intimacy into the image. The pose in photo 7 was not planned; I caught Chika sneaking a peek at the monitor and recognized the charming natural body/arm/hands position and expression. I love catching subjects in un-posed moments like this!

I will be open for Art A Whirl this coming weekend, so stop by and we can discuss your needs. My basic 1-hour headshot packages start at $295 and include four retouched images. Ask about special pricing for small groups and during Second Saturday open studios.

Nothing like threat of a tariff-induced 145% price increase to spur a shopping spree! New purchase case in point: Fujifilm X-T5 and a used/like new Fujinon 50-140mm f/2.8 lens. Here's the first shot from this camera/lens combo: With sensor resolution increased to 40.2 MP compared with 26.1 MP sensor in my X-T4, the resolution is so good I needed to retouch dust specs on my glasses that I found distracting! The longer lens allows tight headshots without crowding in too much on the subject. Lighting: favorite configuration of three lights- two for key and fill, one on background. Lightly retouched in Photoshop.

Even on vacation I find myself doing a lot of portraiture, whether it's of people I'm traveling with or local people I encounter. This man lives in a casa next door to the one in which we were staying in Trinidad, Cuba. Which do you prefer, the black and white or color version?
