Some folks have been following along with this skirt mending so I've decided to post it here! I hope to have the energy to properly wear and photograph it worn sometime soon, but here are some close-ups of the darning I've done!
I'm still seeking information on what this fabric might be (super lightweight, translucent in light, burn test confirms cotton/linen) since the skirt itself has no tags and I'd love to recreate it in every color ever.
What sort of have you been meaning to get to? Do you have a favorite wardrobe piece you've been wearing for years?
IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS
Photo of bright orange, red, magenta, purple, and navy blue fabric held up in front of a light source. The fabric is translucent and very vibrant. Text reads, Visible mending on a favorite wardrobe piece / because preserving materials and memories is important in an age of consumption
....
Photo of bright orange, red, magenta, purple, and navy blue fabric held up on a wooden embroidery hoop. The arm holding the project up is white and visibly tattooed.
Text reads, This skirt was my father's mother's. She probably bought it somewhere in New York City before she retired, but I have no other information about it! No tags, no brand, no sizing.
It's one of my favorite wardrobe pieces but it's showing its age (~40yrs) and my use, so I finally sat down to repair it
.....
Vibrant scarlet fabric with purple accents laid across a white person's hand. It is mended with like-color thread in a woven pattern.
Text reads,
I used cotton embroidery thread that a friend gave me. I didn't always have an exact color match, so I mixed and matched strands from multiple skeins.
