Me and my family. ♥️

We’re rarely in the same place… maybe once every five years. So these are special— but even more so because the two little humans saw snow for the first time in their almost 5 and 10 years of life. And yes, they ate plenty of it. 😆☃️

On another note, Winter always brings a bit of a pause after the craziness of fall and the holidays. I’ve found relief in it. Most of us (especially creatives) are a little desperate for slow.

That’s where I’ve been.

With everything happening in the world around us, I don’t want to forget to nurture my own life and the people in it. To step away when needed. To make sure I’m still in tune with and have energy for what’s right in front of me.

If you’ve made it through the past several years with your relationships intact, your ability to hold nuance, and your heart still open, know that’s not small. Community is significant, and sometimes, staying open hearted can oddly feel the loneliest.

So… thank you all for supporting me. My work. My words. My random ideas and passion projects. And my occasional slower response times (with grace).

I’m still here, and would love to capture your beautiful families, babies, and important moments in your lives. But in the meantime, I hope you all stay well on the inside. ♥️

Life lately… it’s been a whirlwind. I’ve basically been living in my sweats, biking, holding my little sister’s hand through her labor and meeting my new niece 💕😍, spending time with friends and family, enjoying the scenery of life, reflecting, boycotting sugar, and taking supplements to finally reverse my gut health issues (honestly, that part deserves its own blog).

And somewhere in the mix, I’ve been capturing your beautiful moments and reminding myself to rest—giving myself permission to take a break. And in that pause, I’ve realized what I love most about my job: documenting the people you love most, the moments that change your life forever, and the memories you never want to forget.

Because of who I am, I know the trajectory for my business—it’s toward the most intimate moments life offers. Births. Unconventional weddings. Creative love stories. The dates where I happily third-wheel just to capture you being you.

Three things I always want my clients to know:
1. I’ll always show you the back of my camera during the shoot (unless you’re giving birth—of course).
2. I’ll always ask if you have a “good side” or anything you want me to be mindful of during our session. I’ll also tell you to please be picky.
3. I’ll never make you feel bad for following up. Creatives can get INSANELY busy, and I genuinely appreciate the nudge if something slips on my end. You can reach out anytime—these are your moments. I fully understand that.

If you know someone about to give birth, planning a wedding that breaks the mold, or wanting their story told in a creative way—send them my way.

Thank you for following along and supporting my journey. I do this for you. ❤️

Cheers to the backyard wedding reception I crashed last night 😏

I was biking home, turned my butt around, walked up to their front door, and asked if the bride and groom had someone capturing it. Turns out, they didn’t — they had just gotten married in Utah two weeks prior and had a photographer then.

So, I offered to shoot for an hour (on the house), raced home on my bike, grabbed my gear, and drove back. These are a glimpse of what happened in that hour 😍💕

I know I’m bold… but sometimes the most beautiful stories find you if you’re willing to let them.

If your website or social media presence is one of the first contact points for potential clients, does it reflect the value you and your team bring to the table?

I offer headshots, team photos, lifestyle/brand imagery, and storytelling content (such as testimonials). My books are open—contact me via my website: www.savvyphotage.com or email: [email protected] 👩🏻‍💻📸

Here are some photos from last week with the team at NorthWing Digital —a digital marketing agency based in Hopkins that balances strategy with creativity and data with storytelling. I wanted their photos to reflect that.

Today, I needed to get out of my bubble. So, I crossed state lines and went to Ember and Bean in Hudson, WI. When I say this place is a true gem, I don’t just mean the plants were cute and the coffee was lovely. Or that dogs are welcome—which was a huge win, considering I got to pet a 10-week-old puppy and watch three different dogs enjoy pup cups.

What I really mean is the joy I found. The laughter. The connection. The little things that fill daily life with meaning, that If we aren’t paying attention, we miss.

Maddy, one of the girls who works there, doesn’t have social media. She likes to draw and read comics. She’s also hilariously expressive and makes everyone laugh. Riley and Gabby joke around like sisters, chatting like no one else in the world exists (unless a customer walks in 😉). Together, they lit up the room.

I needed this—to focus on the small moments. To focus on the qualities of others—the things that give us our individuality. They are meant to be cherished and noticed. I can get so caught up in my own life that I miss the life and goodness happening all around me.

So yeah, I love that coffee shop and I love being able to capture life, unposed.

I saw her lift her left hand into view of his iPhone camera. Instinctively, I started walking toward them. When she saw me approaching, she lit up and asked if I’d be willing to take a photo of them on his iPhone because they had just gotten engaged. So yeah, here are a few from the photoshoot we did… using my camera. 😆🥰

PSA to all photographers—if you want to stay passionate about what you do, serve. Use your gift to give. Yes, make sure you get paid and protect yourself and the value you bring (especially my fellow people-pleasers), but be generous at times if you have the capacity. It can make someone’s day, and fill you more than you expect.

Congrats, Wyatt and Lizzie! So thankful our paths crossed. 💕

Genetics

I always joke and say that “photography is in my blood” but it really... kind of is. I grew up having some pretty cool grandparents. Throughout my childhood they were the ‘fancy’ family members who got to live in whole different, magical place...Colorado :) When I was fortunate enough to visit, I would always see grandpa with a camera in hand. Aaaand there started my fascination.

Through out the years of public schooling, I messed around with a little $100 hot pink digital camera. But, didn’t really see myself going anywhere with photography. Then, when I hit 15, I had gone through my first break up from an 11 month relationship (yes, at 15... I know...). I went through a period of truly doubting myself--my looks, personality, everything. Sound unhealthy? Yep. I decided I needed something, just didn’t know what. All I knew was I wanted to visit my grandparents and the magical place they dwelled. When I arrived, I was met by their smiling faces, and it was decided--we were going to do my first photoshoot. Seed. Planted.

I didn’t arrive to Colorado with anything fancy, so the first thing we had to do was go clothes shopping. If you ask anyone in high school, I was known for wearing fancy shirts & sweatpants. I can’t lie, I might still do this... :) Needless to say, I had to get out of my comfort zone. I realized shortly how clothing really does reflect how we are feeling on the inside. My grandma, having me try on a little bit more fitted clothing, brought out some extremely internalized insecurity I had about my body. It went like this: “But my hips look weird” Grandma: Lovingly scolding me, and then affirming me. “My legs look big” Grandma: Lovingly scolding me, and then affirming me. “My nose is funny” Grandma: Lovingly scolding me, and then affirming me. “I just don’t look good or feel good about myself.” There many more reasons I felt this way that were due to a broken family vs. a high school boy. But it all compounded over time, and I truly felt worthless inside. This crazy day, my grandma continuously spoke loving truth over me, and got me feeling comfortable enough to wear some cute (not so loose) clothing for my shoot. During the photoshoot, I had moments of self-consciousness, but all subsided as my grandma and grandpa affirmed me throughout the whole thing. I remember feeling beautiful and empowered for the first time during my shoot. When I got the photos back, I remember wanting to cry because I had never seen myself looking as confident as I did in the photos. I knew that was and is the girl I desire to be. This ‘magical place’ ended up including a truly magical experience-- all thanks to my grandparents (Colorado is still cool too;)).

Fast forwarding to the end of high school, I got my first DSLR camera as a gift. I played with it throughout my years at college forgetting I could make photography a career... and officially (towards the end and thousands of dollars later) got my head out of the gutter and realized I was meant to be a photographer. And like genetics, where we share parts of our DNA, I chose to name my photography business after Grandpa’s. (See his shirt in photo below:)).
