As a doula, my job is to pivot wherever birth needs to go and help the family I’m supporting feel grounded and safe. ✨

I got an early morning phone call saying her water was broken but contractions hadn’t begun yet. This family had planned on birthing at , but being a month early required a change in birthing location to the hospital.

I came to the hospital during the early decisions of their induction and to help them feel more grounded and settled amidst this huge shift of plans. The plan was to get a good meal in, start pitocin, maybe sneak in a nap before labor picks up and I’d come back in a few hours.

Once I got back to the hospital, it was only a couple more hours before this sweet baby literally flew out of his mother’s womb. He was born, unmedicated, in the same hands and knees position she birthed her older two babies. This time under different circumstances- preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) and medical induction (pitocin).

Shortly after birth, the team recognized their baby needed respiratory support. I remember feeling so proud of my client for feeling well enough to walk over to the warmer to create more time touching, kissing, bonding with her baby before he was transferred to the NICU. He spent 8 days in the NICU/ICC but now is home growing and thriving with his family. ✨

Welcome to the world, Shepherd 🫶

Cesarean Birth Awareness Month | April, 2026 ✨

Each year, the month of April is a dedicated time to honor and hold space for those who have given birth by cesarean/c-section. Our team of professional doula and photographers have supported and documented countless families in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas through c-sections that range from the calm and planned to the unplanned and emergent.

Regardless of the why or how - cesarean birth deserves to be supported continuously and chosen (doula) by the family. These families deserve to have their memories documented and preserved.

Time and time again, our doula families verbalize how important our presence and support was for them, even when medical staff care felt attuned and aligned. The relationship and trust we develop with clients makes whatever the circumstances of birth unfold feel unique, held, and known.

Cesarean birth can hold a wide range of emotions and meaning to families. For some, their cesarean birth reminds them of their strength and sacrifice to birth their baby safely. For others, their cesarean birth is a source of trauma, loss of autonomy or loss of control. Feelings can range from empowerment, grief, joy, fear, and everything in between.

Through awareness, research, and resources we can move towards reducing the incidence of c-sections in this country, support mental health and advocate for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC).

Thank you to our beloved doula + birth photography clients for sharing your images and stories with our birth community.

Off Call Birth Photography | New Family Session ✨

Our off-call birth photography is a special package that can make birth photography more accessible to families. In this package, we don’t guarantee our ability to attend- but if we’re unable to, we offer a New Family Photography session as a replacement. That way, even if timing doesn’t work out, families still get this precious time documented.

This family originally hired us for our off-call birth photography package. Birth circumstances changed when labor started, and instead of the home birth they planned on (with the incredible team, Twin Cities Midwifery), babe needed to be born via cesarean. In cesarean births, usually the maximum support persons allowed in the OR is partner and doula. Having us present for professional birth photography just wasn’t in the cards for the way their son needed to be born since they had a separate doula supporting them.

Within the first couple of weeks postpartum, I got to join them in their home and photograph all the silliness, love and details of their new family. The entire time was just pure bliss- getting to know little pieces of their personalities and documenting their authentic love for each other.

Congratulations again to this sweet family!

Black Maternal Health Week 2026

Birth photography is powerful.

It brings visibility to things that matter. Lived experiences that need more attention, intention, understanding, and action to dismantle the systems that have been the source of longstanding racism and oppression. Black birthing people in the United States are 3.5x more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth related complications than their white counterparts.

Black joy,

Black birth,

Black maternal health,

Matters.

Thank you to these families that have chosen to share their joy with us and the rest of the birthing community in Minneapolis/St. Paul + beyond.

Safety In An Out-Of-Hospital Birth Center ✨

In a hospital setting, when breathing support is necessary for baby- the umbilical cord is clamped and cut and baby is whisked over to the warmer as soon as possible. Most of the time, baby is out of view for the parents- and often updates about baby’s status is delayed due to proximity and other factors. This is one huge reason why doula support is so important for families. We are a source of constant emotional support for the birthing person and partner during critical moments of birth and postpartum. As a former NICU nurse, I know how important it is to parents be informed when they’re separated from their baby. Naming all the things I can see about how baby is doing and/or what they are doing to support their baby in real time, is so imperative to how their birth will impact in their minds and bodies going forward.

In contrast, in out-of-hospital birth center or home birth practices, resuscitation measures are usually done with the cord left intact, within a distance they can see, hear, and touch their baby. The family is physically closer to the medical staff, which is a big supportive factor in the team being able to communicate health status and interventions in real time with the family. Separation is non-existent in most cases, unless baby needs continued respiratory/other support and requires hospitalization.

The team at Twin Cities Birth Center acted quickly and effectively, followed NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Protocol) and in collaboration with me as the doula, kept this family connected and informed the entire time while their baby needed breathing support.
