How about some freaky fungi for your spooky season? Our next Spooky SNA feature is the scaly ink cap mushroom!🍄

The scaly ink cap (Coprinopsis variegata) mushroom is found on decaying hardwood logs throughout Minnesota during June and July. As the mushroom ages, its gills turn purplish-gray, then black, giving a spooky appearance. Eventually, they liquefy and turn into a black ink-like liquid! 😮

Up next in our Spooky SNA series is a plant known for its unique white color fitting for its spooky name. 👻

Ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora), also known as Indian pipe, is a plant found in the forests of eastern Minnesota. Its name refers to its ghostly white color! These plants do not have chlorophyll, which is used to make food in photosynthesis and gives plants their usual green color. Instead, ghost pipe relies on mychorrhizal fungi to transfer nutrients from nearby plant roots!
