Wild Goose Chase

Saint Mary Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA

I've been quiet for a while, due to a nice combination of a busy workload and a lack of creative inspiration. Since my last post in August, I have had a little time to get out and photograph, and there are definitely some images of which I'm really proud. This shot is near the top of the list.

I had a chance to spend about 24 hours in Glacier National Park in early September and hit a lot of the highlights: Going to the Sun Road, Saint Mary Lake, Hidden Lake, McDonald Falls, and Lake McDonald, to name a few. This photo was taken at Saint Mary Lake during 50+ mph wind gusts, making it impossible to see the beautiful rocks on the lakebed. However, a long exposure smoothed the water, and the light beams from the clouds made for another great point of interest in the frame. Wild Goose Island is the centerpiece here, as the small island feels so out of place next to the mountains around the lake.

This image is on display and for sale at Nine Keys Salon + Metaphysical along with several of my other prints if you would like to see this in person.

All In

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, USA

The skies sometimes struggle to cooperate with me. In stark contrast with my last post, the skies during my night and morning at Valley of Fire were far from interesting and nearly cloudless. However, Valley of Fire is such a magical place that the landscapes can make up for it and allow for some really incredible views. I have to laugh, though, that both of my trips there have been when the skies are clear, especially at sunset. Maybe the third time will be the charm?

I am pumped that I’ll be in Montana soon and hopefully will be able to carve out some time with my camera in both Glacier and the Gallatin Valley, two places I’ve neglected in past visits. Have a great rest of your Monday!

Centered

St. Paul, Minnesota, USA

It had been a while since I'd been out with my camera when I went to St. Paul in early July to catch sunset and the fireworks being launched at CHS Field for the Fourth of July. Between a new baby, long hours at work, and everything happening around us, I just didn't have a ton of motivation to get out and shoot. I'm sure glad I took the opportunity to get out, though, as the sky before sunset was absolutely gorgeous as I looked out over the river at the Cathedral of St. Paul. Even now it's been a while again since I've gotten out with my camera, so maybe it's time to get back out there!

Nails in the Night

My Trip to the American Southwest was cut a bit short due to some circumstances out of my control. I had planned my entire trip around being able to shoot the Milky Way on July 18, which coincided with no moon and what was supposed to be one of the best nights of the year to photograph our galaxy. Unfortunately, I had to head home early that next morning and wasn't able to be in Joshua Tree National Park to catch sunset and the stars the night of the 18th. As I was speeding back to Vegas so I could hope on the plane home the next morning, I found some Joshua trees on the side of the road that lined up perfectly with the rising Milky Way. Looking back, I'm somewhat disappointed I didn't get the full amount of time on my trip, but grabbing this shot on my last night away really makes everything okay.

I happened to luck out when a couple of cars drove by as I was exposing for the foreground to give me just a little bit of light on these Joshua trees and the ground nearby.

Zabriskie Sunset

Death Valley National Park, California, USA

The sky was just okay when I met up with some other photographers at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley prior to heading to our main spot of the night: mud cracks for the foreground of our Milky Way shots. However, just as the sun dipped below the mountains on the other side of the valley, I couldn't resist grabbing a sunstar with these gorgeous hills in the foreground. Sure, it would have been nice to have some clouds in the sky, but I think the clear glow of the sky is beautiful as it is. I can't wait to get back to Death Valley to explore some more spots for sunrise and sunset!

Dream Beneath the Desert Sky

What an incredible experience to chase the Milky Way in the hot desert night. I got away to Nevada and California for a few days to spend some time with my camera. One of the highlights of the trip was going to Death Valley NP where I was able to shoot the Milky Way with some friends. When we packed up and headed our separate ways at midnight, it was still 100 degrees! 15-20mph winds made it feel even hotter. My trip ended up getting cut a little short, but I'm glad I had the chance to get back to Valley of Fire and explore Death Valley and a little bit of Joshua Tree NP while I was gone.

Breakfast

Big Sandy, Montana, USA

My last trip to my grandparents' ranch in north central Montana was a quick one, but I made sure to bring my camera gear with me, since I had never spent any sort of focused time on photography while visiting previously. The morning light made the hills in the background glow, and the deer finding his breakfast really made the picture for me. Though I won't be able to make it back to the ranch this time, I'm looking forward to being back in Montana next month and make up for some lost opportunities I should have used for photography during my other visits.

Watch Your Step

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada, USA

I don't normally take a lot of pictures during the day, as I feel the harsh daylight can wash out a lot of the interest in compositions. However, when I went to Red Rock Canyon last year with a friend to hike for the morning, I figured I'd take my camera anyway, even though it was mid-morning by the time we got on the trail. As I expected, most of the shots I took didn't pan out, though there were some detailed photos of the desert plants that I still will go back to from time to time. Near the middle of our hike, I snapped this one, and really didn't think anything of it until several months after I'd headed home. When I revisited some of my pictures from my trip in November, I was really taken with this shot, as the vibrance of the prickly pear and the mountains in the background really stood out for me. I don't think I'll have a chance to stop at Red Rock Canyon this upcoming trip, but I can't recommend it enough for the beautiful views and accessible trails for hikers of all levels.

One-Eighty

Horsheshoe Bend, Arizona, USA

I take what I can get when I'm able to take trips where I focus on photography. The places I want to hit aren't always at their peaks. My visit to Horseshoe Bend last year was no exception. The parking lot and visitor center were being rebuilt, so shuttles were required to get there, short of being dropped off at the entrance, a luxury I didn't have. Because of that, I ended up visiting later in the morning than I would have liked, but it was still an amazing experience. The canyon is MASSIVE when you stand at the edge of the cliff, something you don't always appreciate when seeing it in pictures. I took my time while I was there, and decided to experiment a little, which resulted in this 2 minute and 13 second exposure. I don't think I'll have a chance to hit Horseshoe Bend again when I head to the desert next week, but I'm anxiously awaiting my next trip to see this magnificent spot!

No Stopping

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, USA

My first trip to Nevada ended with a brief stop to Valley of Fire, a spot that had been on my photography list for years. I had spent the morning at Horseshoe Bend and Lower Antelope Canyon, and knew I needed to make it back to catch sunset before my flight home the next morning. After rushing through northern Arizona and southern Utah, I rolled through the gates of Valley of Fire about an hour before sunset and didn't let a minute go to waste. This shot in particular wasn't one that I immediately gravitated toward as I reviewed what I had captured that night. However, once I noticed it, I loved it, and ended up as one of the winners of a local photo contest with it. I'm headed back to Valley of Fire next week, and I couldn't be more excited!

The Milky Way hanging over Ellingson Island right by Split Rock Lighthouse. The light pollution from Two Harbors and Duluth is clear just over the horizon, but adds some interest in the sky, at least it does in my opinion.

Taken earlier on the same night as my previous photo, this was only my second ever attempt at catching the Milky Way. Thankfully, my friends I was with gave me some great tips on how to expose to make things easier in post-processing.
