Some towns celebrate Halloween. Anoka IS Halloween. 🎃

15 days out, and the Halloween Capital of the World is waking up — banners on the lampposts, color in the trees, and more than a century of tradition in the air.

In 1905, Duluth built America's first transporter bridge — a gondola that carried people, wagons, and streetcars across the ship canal. In 1929–30 they converted it into the vertical-lift bridge you see here: a 386-foot span that still rises 135 feet for the freighters moving between Lake Superior and the harbor.

Captured during blue and golden hour, with the 1901 breakwater lighthouse standing watch at the canal entrance. The bridge made the National Register of Historic Places in 1973; the lighthouse joined it in 2016.

A pilot just spent nearly six hours drawing "The Scream" over Missouri. With a Cessna.🧑‍✈️

N1810R — a Skylane RG — took off and proceeded to sketch Edvard Munch's 1893 masterpiece across the sky at 168 mph, 10,625 feet up.It's live on Flightradar24 right now as the most-tracked flight on Earth, nearly 80,000 people watching.

Flight planning doesn't get more creative than this.🧑‍🎨

Two generations of Norwegian royalty have dedicated this tower.

Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha did it first, on June 15, 1939 — crossing the Atlantic for an 80-foot tower of native bluestone on Duluth's Enger Hill. Seventy-two years later, their son King Harald V came back with Queen Sonja to dedicate it again after a full restoration.

The money came from Bert Enger, who left Norway at 13, built a furniture business in Duluth's West End, and died giving the city two-thirds of his estate — the hill, the park land, and $50,000 for the tower, in the middle of the Depression.

Climb all five stories and you're 531 feet above Lake Superior, with the harbor, the Twin Ports, and the Lift Bridge laid out below you.

Minnesota's Black Beach isn't volcanic — it's reclaimed.🌊

The sand at Silver Bay started life as taconite tailings, the leftover rock from Minnesota's iron mining days. Twenty-five years of it went into Lake Superior. Then the lake went to work — tumbling it, grinding it smooth — and handed back this beautiful beach.

An industrial byproduct, reborn as one of the most photographed beaches on the North Shore. 📸🖤

Minnesota's most scenic traffic jam.

Highway 61 threads 1,344 feet straight through Silver Creek Cliff just north of Two Harbors. It took three years of blasting and half a million cubic yards of rock to replace the old cliff-edge road — a narrow ledge with a small barrier between drivers and Lake Superior.
The old road serves as a beautiful walking trail now.❤️

🚂For 138 years, this bridge had no name on the map.

🚂This is the railroad trestle over the Kettle River at Sandstone — first built in 1888, steel spans added in 1893 and 1903. On September 1, 1894, a refugee train fleeing the Hinckley Fire crossed it with the train itself on fire. 🔥😢

Great Northern, Burlington Northern, BNSF — it's hauled iron ore, timber, and grain between the Twin Cities and Duluth/Superior for well over a century, and it's still working today.

But Google Maps never gave it a name. So today we did: Based on its history…… it's now officially listed as the Sandstone Railroad Bridge. We were more than happy to take the time — 138 years of history deserved a name.❤️
