What a glorious start to a day dedicated to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

This morning I got to help Wisco Joe Coffee Co. with some promotional shots for their new Holy Hill blend that will be available at Holy Hill this fall!

Thanks for looking and Happy Memorial Day!

I got up Saturday morning hoping to catch an incredible post-storm sunrise… but instead was greeted with more blues and greys.

Still, there’s plenty of beauty in that.

This is a tight crop from a 9-shot pano that Facebook wouldn’t let me post yesterday—I’ll drop the full image in the comments.

Thanks for taking a look!

What a day. When the sun finally came out and lit up the trees still coated in ice from before the snow moved in, I forgot for a brief moment that it was March.

If you purchased my calendar this year, you might have wondered why this image was chosen for the month of March, a month we often associate with the arrival of spring. After today, explanations are no longer necessary. Sorry if I jinxed us. 🤣

I tried to get some of the reflections off the ice tonight by driving down to Milwaukee after school. Unfortunately, the ice was gone, but we had a pretty cool sunset.

Good morning from MKE!

This is the Milwaukee Breakwater Light during a brutally cold winter morning, with temperatures starting at just -18 (-35 to-40 with the wind) and sea smoke pouring off Lake Michigan as the sun broke through the clouds. That steam forms when frigid air moves over relatively warmer water, creating the rolling fog-like effect across the lake. The light itself was built in 1915 to guide ships safely into Milwaukee Harbor, and it’s been taking on ice, wind, and waves like this for more than a century. Mornings like this really show how powerful—and unforgiving—the lake can be.

Thanks for looking!

When the air drops to –15°F and Lake Michigan is still relatively warm, the lake starts to steam. ❄️🌊
That rolling fog is sea smoke—formed when frigid air moves over warmer water, causing rapid evaporation and condensation.
Cold enough to hurt your face. Warm enough for the lake to breathe.

Snow again! ❄️ I snuck out to shoot this morning but had to hit the road fast—first stop UW–La Crosse for a track meet, then off to the University of Minnesota to drop my son back for the semester. Hope you enjoy this one from last weekend before I can get to today’s shots.

Thanks for looking!
