🌔Don’t forget to look up tonight!🌖

We’ve got a pretty special lunar eclipse happening tonight. At its peak, about 96% of the Moon will slip into Earth’s darkest shadow—making it about as close to a total lunar eclipse as you can get without actually being one. Maximum eclipse here in Wisconsin is around 11:12 PM.

The photo included with this post is from my favorite lunar eclipse I’ve ever photographed—taken half a world away in Tanzania. There’s something pretty cool about knowing that no matter where you are on Earth, we’re all looking up at the same Moon.

If the skies cooperate tonight, get outside and take a look!

Sunrise this morning was a bit hazy, which made for some great pics. Hard to believe fall is just around the corner! If you've followed my page over the years, you know that's usually when I start ramping up my local photography again. Can't wait!

On a different note, if you didn't see my previous posts, Sophie and I tried something completely new this past week, and we could use your help getting it off the ground.

We put together our first-ever real YouTube videos. We honestly don't know where we'll take it from here, but we had a blast making them and would love to keep doing more. If you have a few minutes, a watch, like, or comment really does help us as we're getting started.

I'll put the second of the two videos in the comments. If you watch it, you'll see some of the best drone footage I've ever gotten in the mountains, a little behind-the-scenes look at how we approach photography, and, of course, some Jeep adventures along the way.

Going forward, I'm hoping the channel becomes a place where we can share a lot more of our adventures, along with more about photography and how I capture some of the images you've seen on this page over the years.

We finally did it! đŸŽ„

After years of traveling, taking photos, finding back roads, and occasionally making questionable decisions in a Jeep, Sophie Herriot and I decided it was finally time to start filming some of it.

Our first My Wisconsin YouTube adventure is officially live!

For this trip, Sophie and I packed up the Gladiator and headed from Wisconsin to Colorado—with a Zach Bryan concert in Denver as the destination and a whole lot of Colorado in between.

Part I takes us deep into the San Juan Mountains and over Ophir Pass. đŸ”ïž

This is definitely something new for us, but we had an absolute blast making it—and there’s a lot more coming.

And this clip is a little preview of Part II: Poughkeepsie Gulch, including some behind-the-scenes insight into how we approach photography while we're on the road.

We also came home from this trip with what might be my all-time favorite drone footage I’ve ever captured in the mountains. I can't wait to share more of it.

If you’ve followed My Wisconsin for the photography over the years, I hope you’ll come along as we expand the adventure a little bit. The photos are still a huge part of it—now we’re just sharing more of the story behind them.

When I bought the Mavic 4 Pro back in December, I really fought the urge to recoup some of the cost by selling my Mavic 3. In the end, I decided to hang onto it... just in case the 4 ever had issues.

Well... the 4 has issues.

Fortunately, I still have the backup.

I've always had a hard time letting things go. . . this experience will probably only reinforce that habit. 😂😂

A vacation to Rome includes one of the things I like least about any travel destination: crowds. While I'd consider myself a people person, I also like my space.

Normally, that's easy enough to work around by getting up before everyone else. The challenge at the Colosseum, though, is that the crowds aren't just early risers—they're the people who never went to bed. At sunrise, the place is packed with young people waiting for that first light so they can capture the perfect selfie or TikTok.

Fortunately, once the sun finally breaks the horizon, the crowd thins out surprisingly fast.

That said, I have to admit I enjoy seeing so many young people out there doing something that gets them outside instead of sitting indoors all day. Even if, like me, they're just trying to create something they'll eventually put right back on those screens. 😂😂

Showing up at one of the most photographed and visited landmarks on the planet—knowing it may be the only time you'll ever be there—and hoping to create an image of any significance is a daunting challenge for any photographer.

I've been fortunate to photograph incredible places around the world, but many of those opportunities come with only a few minutes to scout a location, come up with a plan, make the image, and move on with the group. This trip was different. We were in Italy celebrating my wife's birthday, and for the first time on an international trip, I had some freedom to slow down and photograph a place the way I normally would.

Those of you who follow my work know I've spent countless mornings, evenings, and sometimes entire days waiting for the right light at places close to home in Wisconsin. Memorable images rarely happen by accident—they're usually the result of patience, planning, and a willingness to come back again and again.

Unfortunately, you don't get that luxury when you're standing in front of the Colosseum and you don't get to do it alone.

Instead of trying to create the same image that thousands of people had already taken that day, I started looking for something that felt uniquely Rome. As the blue hour settled in, a modern tram swept past where a bus had just been waiting for the light to change. During a 37 second exposure the two combined to create a unique path of lights to the nearly 2,000-year-old amphitheater, connecting the ancient city with the one that's still alive today.

I finally had a chance to get out and shoot after several days of wildfire smoke. While these photos of Holy Hill weren't taken at the peak, they still capture the surreal haze that blanketed much of the state.

Thursday may have been the worst of it here, when a monitoring site in the Milwaukee area recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 644. To put that in perspective, anything over 300 is considered "Hazardous" by the EPA. That's an incredible number.

From what I could find, this wasn't just one of Wisconsin's worst air quality events on record—it appears to rank among the most severe modern air pollution events ever measured in the United States, with parts of the Midwest recording some of the worst air quality anywhere in the world that day.

The smoke originated from hundreds of wildfires burning across southern Canada and parts of northern Minnesota. My thoughts are with the communities closest to those fires, who are dealing with impacts far beyond the haze we experienced here.

It's amazing how something so destructive can also create such an unforgettable atmosphere. Here are a couple views of Holy Hill through the smoke.
