Good morning from MKE!
This is the Milwaukee Breakwater Light during a brutally cold winter morning, with temperatures starting at just -18 (-35 to-40 with the wind) and sea smoke pouring off Lake Michigan as the sun broke through the clouds. That steam forms when frigid air moves over relatively warmer water, creating the rolling fog-like effect across the lake. The light itself was built in 1915 to guide ships safely into Milwaukee Harbor, and it’s been taking on ice, wind, and waves like this for more than a century. Mornings like this really show how powerful—and unforgiving—the lake can be.
Thanks for looking!
