Spring at Gibbs Gardens, with my parents along for the whole day. Cherry blossoms overhead, tulip beds in every color you can think of, and a daffodil field that goes on longer than you'd believe.

This whole shoot just started as a proof of concept. It was scary to submerge my camera in the pool - but the waterproof housing worked! My sons become my favorite test subject all over again. Silly bubbles!

This started as "let's see if the camera even works underwater." It might be turning into a real thing I offer.

My dad turned eighty a few weeks ago. My mom, sisters and I threw him a surprise party, and my nibling Seven — you've seen them in this feed already — designed the shirt he's wearing here: a geode behind a celebratory eighty, with the line "a gem of a celebration." We made a family shirt for his seventieth, and we still have those too.
Dad is the reason we all know what a geode is in the first place. Rocks, maps, travel, asking how things came to be the way they are — that's what he handed down, and it's a straight line from there to the bold color and the sense of adventure in this work now. Nine grandchildren between his three daughters, and every one of them grew up hearing some version of the same thing: go look closer.

Senior portraits — an afternoon downtown, hunting for backdrops that weren't a school gym wall. Brick storefronts, glass reflections, a stairwell with hard afternoon shadows to sit in. I love when a senior wants to move through a city instead of standing in front of one backdrop, and enough good light to make it worth the walk. If you know a senior who wants portraits that don't look like everyone else's, send them my way.

Allison and I have been close since our twenties. When she started having kids, we were both living in Colorado Springs, so I was there within days of each birth, camera in hand.

She's since moved to a farm in upstate New York, we visit anytime I get a layover in Albany. Her daughter caught the best of the afternoon light first, turning in profile in a warm window glow, before Allison joined her for a cheek-to-cheek frame that's pure, easy joy between the two of them. Outside, the wind picked up and her daughter's hair went wild mid-laugh against a backdrop of trees, and by the end her little brother couldn't resist climbing onto a log to join her, the two of them finishing the afternoon together.

Nothing here was staged. It's just what happens every day in their beautiful home.

Meet Roger.
Roger is a peacock. Roger lives on my friend Allison's farm in upstate New York, alongside a flock of very photogenic chickens and some very enthusiastic dogs, one who has apparently made it his life's mission to herd him.

And Roger — I need you to know this — is named after my dad.

That might be one of my favorite facts in the entire world. I had a few hours on a layover, ended up at Allison's, and came home with proof that peacocks are, without competition, one of the most ridiculous and beautiful animals alive.
Bold color doesn't always come from a styled shoot. Sometimes it's just standing in a backyard in upstate New York, waiting for a bird to turn around.

Badwater Basin, Death Valley — the lowest point in North America, 282 feet below sea level, and one of the strangest landscapes I've ever stood in. A boardwalk runs out onto a cracked white salt flat that just keeps going until the mountains stop it.

James needed headshots for the real world — heading out of college and into the job market, no time for anything overly styled. Just clean light, a couple of locations, and images he could actually use on LinkedIn the next day.
This is the other half of what I do: not every session needs to be bold and experimental. Sometimes the job is just making you look sharp, competent, and hireable. Headshot sessions are open for booking.

Three siblings, three completely different energies — one confident and easy in front of the camera, one who lit up next to a giant saguaro, one glowing in the last of the desert light. I've known these three since they were small; I held the youngest just hours after he was born.
Getting to watch kids grow up through a camera lens is one of the quieter perks of doing this for as long as I have.

Jessica and I taught physics together at the Air Force Academy. Our husbands hit it off just as fast, and between two science-minded families with kids close in age, we've stayed close for years. We had a great trip out to visit them in Tucson, and of course I brought a camera.
