There’s something timeless about that lighthouse standing watch over the breakwater, especially beneath a soft pastel sky like this one.

SHARE THE ROAD. 🐎🌅

Some mornings on Assateague feel almost magical. Fiery pink, orange, and purple skies, the marsh glowing beneath them, and our wild horses wandering freely across the island.

But with that beauty comes a responsibility. We are visitors here. They are home.

Two horses were recently stuck along Bayberry Drive; a reminder of just how quickly our roads can become dangerous for wildlife.

So slow down. Stay vigilant. Obey posted speed limits, and when horses are nearby, remember that 15 mph on the busy 611 causeway, and Bayberry Drive are often a more appropriate speed.

Whether you’re here to camp, fish, hunt, photograph, or simply escape, enjoy the scenery, give wildlife space, and leave no trace.

Take your time. Look up. Share the road. The herd depends on you. ❤️🐎

A little chestnut reminder of just how precious Assateague is. 🧡🐴

These young foals are growing, learning, and finding their way in a wild world. When you visit, please slow down, stay vigilant, and give wildlife the space they need. Their safety depends on all of us.

This is the time of year we get really excited for some Eastern Shore Sailing. By Maryland and Virgina's historic skipjack fleet. Not many of these beautiful old ships are still floating. Come see the Triple Crown of Chesapeake Bay skipjack racing.

If you haven't seen a Skipjack race at least once, you owe it to yourself to check on out and soak in some Eastern Shore tradition.

You will have three opportunities coming up:

⛵ 2026 Maryland Skipjack Races

For anyone interested in photographing or watching the traditional Chesapeake Bay skipjacks, here are the major Maryland races coming up this fall.

• September 7 — Deal Island Skipjack Race
Deal Island, MD | 9:30 AM

• September 13 — Skipjack Heritage Days Race
Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis | 12:00 PM

• September 26 — Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race
Cambridge, MD | 11:00 AM

Deal Island – Sept. 7
The Labor Day race takes place on Tangier Sound and is one of the most traditional and visually impressive skipjack races of the season.

Sandy Point – Sept. 13
Skipjack racing returns to Sandy Point, offering a great opportunity to photograph the fleet along the Chesapeake near Annapolis.

Cambridge – Sept. 26
The Choptank Heritage Race is held off Cambridge, with Long Wharf Park providing an excellent land-based viewing and photography location.

These historic vessels are such an important part of Chesapeake Bay history, and watching them race under sail is something pretty special. I personally love these families and volunteers that help preserve history and sailing tradition. The local Deal Island- Chance Lions Club and all the events volunteers always treat me very well, with delicious breakfast sandwiches and softshell crabs for lunch. Shout out to the Whitelock Family and all the skipjack families and volunteers that will race this year, and that make these events possible. Soak in some true Chesapeake Bay culture.

I am very excited to learn that this photograph was selected for The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group's local annual calendar!

I titled this image “October Reflections” because I captured it after the Point finally opened back up in the fall. When the Point does reopen, many of us locals love to hike around it and photograph the unique lines, angles, and views we have been missing all summer.

You just never know what you might see or find out there. Sometimes it is a stunning view, and sometimes it is something a little deeper and more meaningful.

I loved the way the clouds reflected in the still pool of water before me. But, as I often am, I was also deep in my own personal reflections.

Perhaps that is one of the things I love most about photography. Sometimes you set out to photograph a landscape and end up discovering something within yourself along the way.

Seasons Change

Summer is slowly winding down, and even the iconic East End Breakwater Lighthouse seems to know it. The gulls know it, and so do we locals. 🩵

You can feel the humidity easing just a little, the evenings growing cooler, and those first subtle whispers that another season is waiting patiently just around the corner.

I’m a lifelong lover of summer, perhaps being an August baby has something to do with that. ☀ But there is something equally beautiful about fall. The crispness in the air, the changing light, and the quiet spectacle of the forests trading their summer greens for gold, amber, and crimson.🍂

There is wisdom in the seasons. They remind us that change is not something to resist, but something to embrace. Every ending carries the quiet promise of another beautiful beginning.

So, tell me, where do you all love to go for the best fall foliage? I’m always looking for a beautiful new corner of the world to wander through with a camera in hand.

For now, I’ll savor these final golden weeks of summer, grateful for the warmth, the salt air, and the simple gift of being here to witness another season turn.

💙 Coco 💙

The Maryland side of the island’s beautiful resident buckskin.

At 31 years old, Coco is one of Assateague’s oldest mares, and there is something especially humbling about standing in her presence. She carries with her the quiet wisdom of a life lived among the dunes, the salt air, and the ever-changing tides.

Every encounter with her feels like a little gift from the island. At her age, we know our time with this beautiful old soul may be growing shorter, and perhaps that is what makes each moment with her feel even more precious.

She has been a wonderful horse to experience, photograph, and admire. Her beauty goes far beyond her golden coat. It is found in the years she has endured, the life she has lived, and the simple grace with which she continues to walk these shores.

May we always remember that some of the most beautiful moments in life are the ones we cannot hold onto. We can only be grateful that we were there to witness them.

Good evening, Delmarva.

How about a few pretty barn photos of the iconic Townsend Barn along King’s Highway in Lewes, Delaware?

I’m calling this little series “Before the Storm", as these photographs were taken about an hour and a half before last week’s violent storms pushed through Delaware, bringing damaging winds, torrential rain, and a few reported tornadoes to the region.

Wait until you see a few of those photos in the coming days. That shelf cloud was absolutely massive and passed right over Cape Henlopen. :) ⛈️

As our planet warms, it certainly seems as though we’re seeing more frequent and increasingly violent weather events. And while there’s nothing beautiful about the destruction these storms can leave behind, there is something undeniably captivating about the moments just before they arrive.

These stunning clouds were simply too pretty to roll past without stopping for a few snaps. The old Townsend Barn, standing beneath that dramatic sky, felt like a little piece of Delmarva frozen in time.

Finding Assateague’s Wild Horses

People often ask, “How do you get to see Assateague’s wild horses on the beach?”

The short answer? Wake up early.

Especially on those hot summer mornings when the wind is blowing from the west. Those west winds can push mosquitoes and biting flies out toward the marsh and dune areas, often encouraging the horses to move closer to the beach where the morning air is a little more comfortable. Don't forget to layer up!

One of my favorite ways to experience this is to start from the National Park parking area and hike either north toward the Maryland campground or south along the National Seashore.

On those really hot summer days, you can often find several bands making their way toward the shoreline, greeting the first light of morning as the sun rises over the Atlantic.

There is something pretty special about being on the beach before most people have even started their day, with nothing but the sound of the surf and the sight of wild horses moving freely along the shoreline.

Sometimes, the best way to find Assateague’s horses is simply to slow down, get up early, and let the island reveal them to you.

Just remember keep a bus length and slow down during your drive through our parks.
