One of the questions we get asked a lot this time of year is “Don’t those cows get hot? Why don’t you shave them?”

The short answer istheir coat is designed for it. Scottish Highland cattle have a double coat:
•A long outer layer that protects from sun, rain, and insects
•A soft undercoat that helps regulate body temperature

When you shave a Highland:
•You remove their natural protection from the sun (increasing risk of sunburn)
•You take away their ability to regulate temperature properly
•You expose their skin to flies and insects
•You can create more stress instead of relief

Highlands have been thriving for centuries because of this coat, it’s part of what makes them so unique and hardy.

Now, do they still feel the heat?
Of course. And that’s where management matters more than clippers:
✔️ Shade
✔️ Fresh water
✔️ Proper airflow
✔️Limiting stress during peak heat

And for the ones that are slow to shed, we help them along the right way, we brush them regularly and use a good shedding comb to remove that winter coat naturally. No need to shave.

On our farm, we adjust our schedule to care for the cows, not change the cows to fit us.

Just because something looks hot to us doesn’t mean nature got it wrong.
