Listen, I always overshoot. I can’t help it. And then I have a million images to go through. And if it’s a wedding, then I REALLY go wild. But it’s a good kind of wild! I’m finally wrapping up this gorgeous wedding after too many delays (thank you, COVID)! Rivercrest Farm in Dover is the most picturesque location for a ceremony, and Mckenzie and Matt are such beautiful people, inside and out. Scrolling through these images makes me feel all warm all over again. To see the full gallery, click below or the link in my bio. https://www.denicehazlett.com/mckenzie-and-matthew

Today I met Danna and Dean at Barnes Nature Preserve in Wooster, Ohio, where the landscape had turned itself into a quiet poem of snow strewn with russets and bronzes, layered with scarlet sumac, smooth dogwood, and golden prairie grass. Color holding its frosty breath.

I fell back as the couple walked the way people do when they’re comfortable inside a moment. Three years of dating behind them and a fresh engagement, standing at the edge of what comes next.

Winter suits love like this. Stripped of spectacle, rooted in intention. Two people choosing to stay warm together while the world rests.

Some gifts are practical.
Some are sentimental.
And some are just really awkward.

This session with the Torrence siblings, Chloe, Sam, and Cozette, was a gift for their parents, inspired by the timeless genre of awkward family photos.

They were absolute champs while I reacquainted myself with my indoor lighting gear (a humbling experience, always). We giggled and squealed and schemed. There were gummy bears, pretzels, glitter, and long pauses where everyone tried very hard not to laugh.

We even recreated an old family photo from when the twins were babies, complete with awkward smiles, stiff poses, and eyes staring into the middle distance.

Those recreated images are now framed in their parents’ home. Family photos don’t always have to be polished or serious or perfect. Sometimes they just need to capture the humor, the history, and the love between your favorite peeps.

As Chloe would say, “Ten out of ten. No notes.”

New Year’s Day. 15 degrees. Twenty people.

Five families, spread across four states. Little kids, winter germs, travel logistics. Honestly, just everyone showing up felt like a victory.

We met at Evergreen Park in Kidron, Ohio, bundled to the eyeballs, and I watched nerves slowly turn into relief as car after car pulled in. The kids? Absolute champs. Even the ones who don’t love being told what to do. Especially impressive, given the cold that made your eyelashes feel crunchy.

When I photograph extended families (what I call my Mossy Oak Sessions), I’m always clear about one thing: kids are king.
We laugh. We dance. We sing. We stop for snacks. We pause for meltdowns. We bribe when necessary. I never want a child to walk away from a session hating photos or photographers. I want them to feel seen, heard, and safe, no matter the mood they show up with.

Perfect images aren’t the goal.
Truth is. Connection is. Memory is.
These photos don’t need to be flawless; they just need to hold this moment in time, exactly as it was.

It’s one of the reasons I’m so proud to specialize in extended outdoor family sessions.

People often reach out apologetically when they ask about family sessions over the holidays.

“I don’t want to intrude.”
“I know it’s a busy time.”
“I totally understand if you’re not doing sessions right now.”

And I always want to say this, out loud and clearly: please don’t apologize.

I love winter. I love the snow, the quiet, the glow of holiday lights against early darkness. I love the way homes feel fuller and softer this time of year. And I find it to be a real honor when families welcome me into their homes during celebrations that matter to them.

My friend Annie connected me with Julie, who wanted an extended family session, one that finally captured her whole “motley crew,” as she lovingly called them. She told me some family members really don’t love having their photos taken, which is exactly why this mattered so much. When everyone is together, when time slows just enough, when these moments can finally be held onto.

I knew we were going to get along just fine when Julie told me their favorite things are seriously eating, playing board games, watching sports, and alllll the Christmas movies—Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Elf, Love Actually. Because that’s me, too!

When I arrived, Julie and Brian’s house felt like stepping straight into the season. Trees in every room. Greenery winding up the stair rail. A kitchen island covered in beautiful holiday treats. The smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls floating through the air. And then, the people. Warm, funny, welcoming people. Every single one of them a delight.

This is why I say yes to winter sessions.
This is why I show up with my camera and leave with a happy heart.

Because being trusted with moments like these, inside real homes, with real families, exactly as they are, is never an inconvenience. It’s a gift.

I’ll be in Wooster through January 18th for any Wooster-area clients who’d like to book a session. And keep an eye out soon for a limited-time winter special just for the Wooster area.

Sometimes the in-between seasons end up being the ones you treasure the most.

I'm dog-sitting in Wooster this month and doing my best to soak up beauty, see interesting movies, read and write essays, edit photos, cook good food, watch stand up comedy specials, and go on hikes. Today, I joined a group for a photography hike at Wooster Memorial Park, and I'm so glad I did it. I've had it on my calendar for a couple of weeks, but as it got closer, I almost chickened out. But I didn't! I went! I overcame my anxiety and I went! And I had fun! And I even met some cool people! It was good to take my camera out just for fun again.

If you're in Wooster and would like to book a family shoot, give me a holler. I've scoped out some good winter spots and I'd love to work with you!

Sun-soaked sessions like this one get me every time.

I’ve been photographing this family since Memphis was a baby, and now he’s six—wiggly, hilarious, unpredictable, and absolutely perfect.

We met at The Wilderness Center for their annual “walking with Memphis” photo (a tradition I dearly love). Some years he’s shy, some years he’s ready to take off running, but every year, we get the exact moments we’re meant to get.

And this one was extra special: Jennifer and Casey are celebrating 20 years of marriage. Twenty!

Watching families grow really is one of the sweetest parts of this job. 😍

There’s something really special about photographing a family year after year; you start to feel the seasons of their life in a really lovely way.

I’ve been photographing Jennifer, Casey, and Memphis since he was just a baby, and this year we met at The Wilderness Center in Wilmot on one of those golden, sun-soaked mornings where everything feels a little more magical.

Memphis is six now—brilliant, curious, and full of that wiggly, wonderful energy that makes childhood exactly what it should be. Some days he’s shy, some days he’s ready to run the show, and sometimes he proves all predictions wrong within about three seconds. That’s part of the magic.

Their family loves parks and playgrounds, festivals and beaches, Monster Jam, Lego Masters, and singing along to “We Will Rock You.” And every year, they look forward to the same thing: their annual “walking with Memphis” photo. A little tradition that gives their story another page.

Like most mamas, Jennifer wonders how cooperative her kid will be, whether everyone will feel comfortable, whether we’ll snag that one portrait she’s been imagining. And every year, without fail, the session goes just the way it’s supposed, complete with authentic giggles and lots of cuddles.

This year was extra special, too; Jennifer and Casey are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary! Two decades. A whole love story carried into the warm, Ohio sunlight.

These are the families that make this work feel less like work and more like witnessing time—watching a little boy grow, watching his parents find new versions of themselves, watching love keep unfolding, one day at a time.

Thank you, Jennifer and Casey, for allowing me to walk with the three of you through these years. It’s truly an honor.
