Some wedding days are big celebrations. Others are quiet promises. 🙏🏻

This year, these two chose to make their promise to each other before God at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church here in Middletown, PA. Next year, they’ll celebrate with their friends and family, but this day was about something much simpler and deeply meaningful: their marriage, their faith, and the little family they’ve already created together.

I honestly wasn’t prepared for how emotional I would feel when I stepped inside the church.

The sunlight was pouring through the stained-glass windows, casting the most beautiful colors throughout the sanctuary, and I immediately felt overwhelmed by God’s presence. I cried. There was something so peaceful about it that I can’t completely put into words.

After their ceremony, we slowed everything down and created some cozy family portraits with their baby. And looking at the three of them together felt like such a beautiful reminder that this wasn’t only the beginning of a marriage, it was another chapter in a family story already being written.

What a beautiful place to make a promise before God.

Thank you, Lord, for being so good to us.

Being in front of a camera can feel intimidating, even when you’re surrounded by people you know and love.

Both of these girls admitted they were nervous about their senior portraits, and their moms were right there with us, helping encouraging them and making sure we capture all the beautiful spots they had in vision around Country Joy Flower. But I keep reminding the girls of one thing: you don’t have to look at me and smile all the time. We were surrounded by flowers in full bloom, open fields, beautiful greenery, and so many little corners to explore. There was no reason every photograph needed to look at the camera and smile. Sometimes I asked them to walk, to look away, I photographed one while the other got a little break from the attention.

We use some of the same locations for both girls, but gave each other their own moments within those spaces, and then when it fell right right, we brought them back together. That’s when some of my favorite photographs started happening, the laughing, the silliness, the expressions that weren’t planned, those little glimpses of two cousins who suddenly weren’t thinking quite so much about having their senior portraits taken anymore. And as the evening came closer to an end, event the overcast sky gave us a few little glimpses of the sunset. But I think what I’ll remember most about this session wasn’t the flowers or even the sunset. It was getting to the point where they felt comfortable to tell me when something felt awkward, when they were nervous, or when they simply needed a moment. I WANT that honesty. You don’t have to pretend you’re completely comfortable in front of my camera when you’re not.

My job isn’t to make you perform for me. Is to pay attention, guide you through it, and slowly find the places where you start feeling a little more like yourself.

One of the things I love to do but don’t get to do often is to take photos of random things from the places I visit. These are a few from my last trip to Ocean City, New Jersey. Thanks to my couple who allowed me to carpool with them for our locations! That’s how I was able to get these.

Some evenings you remember through photographs. Others you can almost feel again. 🌊

This one, I can still hear.

The constant sound of the waves reaching the shore and slowly pulling themselves back into the ocean. The breeze moving through our hair and clothes. That unmistakable salty smell in the air that somehow tells you you’re near the sea before you even see it.

The sun was warm on our skin as it slowly made its way toward the horizon, but every time our feet touched the water, we were met with that refreshing cold that made us want to run right back out again. 😂

And we did A LOT of running.

Running by the water. Chasing each other. Playing tag. Laughing when the waves came a little closer than expected. Letting the wind do whatever it wanted and forgetting for a while that we were there to take photographs at all.

There was so much movement that evening.

But there was stillness, too.

Those little moments when we stopped running and simply looked around us. When the sound of the waves became louder because nobody was talking. When they held each other and watched the colors in the sky slowly change as another summer day came to an end.

I think that’s what I loved most about this evening.

It wasn’t just beautiful because we were at the beach during sunset.

It was the feeling of being there.

Bare feet covered in sand. Salty air. Windblown hair. Cold water around our ankles. Warm light touching everything around us. Laughter carried away by the breeze.

And two people, right in the middle of all of it, getting to slow down for an evening and simply enjoy being together.

Sometimes I think photographs become even more meaningful when they can take you back to everything that existed outside of the frame.

Not only what it looked like…

but what it sounded like.

What it smelled like.

What it felt like.

And I hope years from now, when they look through these photographs, they can almost hear those waves again.

A bride once decided not to book me because I don’t drink alcohol while I’m working weddings.

And genuinely... I wasn’t offended.

During our conversation, I realized she wasn’t just interviewing photographers based on their portfolios. She was paying attention to personalities. She knew the kind of energy she wanted around her on her wedding day, and she was trying to figure out who would naturally fit into that environment.

I actually respect that.

Your photographer is one of the vendors who spends SO much of your wedding day right beside you. We’re there during the nerves of getting ready, the quiet moments before the ceremony, family dynamics, portraits, tears, chaos, laughter, and eventually the party.

So yes—loving someone’s photographs matters.

But liking the person behind the camera matters too.

I don’t expect every couple to match my personality. Part of my job is reading the room. I can slow everything down for my quiet, introverted couples, and I can absolutely match the energy of the couple who is ready to PARTY. 💃🏻🕺🏽

But there are also parts of who I am and how I work that aren’t going to change just to secure a booking.

And if a couple meets me and realizes, “She’s wonderful, but she’s not OUR photographer,” I’m genuinely okay with that.

Because the opposite is also true.

When my couples and I click, when they trust me, when they can be completely themselves around me—that relationship shows in their photographs.

Sometimes a successful consultation doesn’t end with a contract.

Sometimes it ends with two people realizing they should keep looking until they find the person who feels right. ❤️

Another secret successfully kept! 💍🤫

James and I had been quietly planning this proposal for a while, making sure every little detail was thought through so she wouldn’t suspect a thing.

And when I say discreet... James literally saved my phone number in his contacts as “Dad” just in case one of my messages or updates happened to pop up on his phone. 😂 That’s commitment to keeping a secret!

A few weeks before the proposal, he even brought her to Hershey Gardens. She loved walking around, enjoying the beautiful scenery and getting some exercise in, completely unaware that the visit was also the perfect distraction from what he was actually planning.

Then came the real day. 🌹

We had the most beautiful fresh summer weather, and the Rose Garden was FULL of roses in so many different colors. Everything felt calm and peaceful, which somehow matched the two of them perfectly.

Once the big question was asked and the nerves started settling down, we spent some time walking around the gardens taking their first portraits as an engaged couple. There was so much genuine laughter—partly from the excitement and nerves, and partly because I kept asking James to do goofy things just to make her laugh. 😂

But there’s something even sweeter about the season these two are stepping into.

They’ve already spent years building a life together, and now they’re preparing to welcome their baby in November. In the middle of all that anticipation, they get to add one more beautiful chapter to their story:

They’re getting married. 🤍

Congratulations to you both! Thank you, James, for trusting me with the secret, the planning, and such an important moment in your story.

And I think we can officially change my contact name from “Dad” now. 😂

The seconds before an engagement proposal are INTENSE 😬😂
