Do you all have any photos you’d like to share with me for the America 250 special keepsake edition of the County-Courier?

I am mainly looking for historic photos.

The older the better.

Photos such as past parades, 4th of July’s, soldiers/veterans, coal miners, buildings, events, etc.

If so, dig them out of your photo albums, shoeboxes, closets or wherever you’ve been hiding them so you can comment them below along with the information to go with the picture.

I would love to have some history of the area and the people that have made it what it is today to include in the newspaper.

KEEP THE CROSS BURNING IN MIDDLESBORO

For generations, the illuminated 10th Street Cross overlooking Middlesboro has stood as a symbol of faith and hope for the community. The cross has overlooked the city since around 1950 and has continued to burn through the dedication of one local family, volunteers, and the generosity of donations.

Today, that same family is asking for the community's help to ensure the cross continues shining for years to come.

Trees have grown up around the cross, and several limbs are hanging over it. If one were to fall, it could damage the cross, break electrical lines or utility poles, and require extensive work and expense to repair because of the difficult location.

The cross is located on private property, and all maintenance is funded through donations and completed by volunteers. Access to the site is limited to a side by side from above the cross or by climbing the steep mountainside.

At least three times each year, the underbrush and trees beneath the cross must be cut so the area remains accessible if repairs or maintenance become necessary.

To help ensure the continued upkeep of the landmark, the Maintenance of the 10th Street Cross Fund has been established at Hearthside Bank. Donations will be used exclusively for the maintenance of the cross so it can continue overlooking Middlesboro for generations to come.

Elliott Crews Prepare for Electric Pole Upgrades in Middlesboro

Crews with Elliott were busy in downtown Middlesboro this week as workers conducted what appeared to be preparatory work for the installation of new steel utility poles.

Multiple bucket trucks and line workers were on site working around existing power lines while using specialized orange insulating line covers designed
to protect energized conductors and allow work to be performed safely with minimal disruption to electrical service.

While the existing wooden poles remain in place, the work underway appears to be part of the preparation process for transferring electrical lines and equipment to new steel poles in the coming weeks.

Steel utility poles are increasingly being used by utility providers because of their strength, longevity, and resistance to weather, insects, and decay. The upgrades are intended to improve the reliability and durability of the electrical distribution system for years to come.

The project drew the attention of motorists and pedestrians throughout the day as crews worked high above the streets using specialized equipment to
prepare the infrastructure for the next phase of construction.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution when traveling
through active work zones and to remain alert for utility workers and equipment as the project progresses.
