What is Hawaii like?
Beaches and palm trees. That is the postcard, and it is real. On the west side of the Big Island, the water shifts from turquoise over sand to deep blue past the reef. Coconut palms lean over the shore, fronds clicking in the trade winds. Some beaches are black volcanic sand. Some are white and soft. Some are quiet enough that you can hear the surf before you see it. Hawaii looks exactly like that, and then it keeps going.

Playas y palmeras. Esa es la postal, y es real. En el lado oeste de la Isla Grande, el agua pasa del turquesa sobre la arena al azul profundo más allá del arrecife. Las palmeras de coco se inclinan sobre la orilla, y las hojas suenan con los vientos alisios. Hay playas de arena volcánica negra. Hay playas blancas y suaves. Hay playas tan tranquilas que se oye el oleaje antes de verlo. Hawái se ve exactamente así.
