Marrakech is known for its rooftops. This was just one of them. It glowed in the early morning light.

This was like a trust walk. Our driver pulled over and said to go with a local guide. We later realized that this seems to be common. The guides for the most part do not wear uniforms, name tags, ID or anything that would distinguish them as official guides. It turned out that despite the ghost town feel, the guide was very well versed in and proud of his town’s history. His appearance hid the fact that he was well educated and a polyglot.

It was a reminder to not judge a book by its cover.

Ait Ben Haddou is a historic fortified village. Although it may look ancient, it is still the home of a few families who have not made the move across the river to the new village.

The homes are made of clay and straw and have to be redone every few months due to cracking.

There was no electricity or running water until a few months ago.

Our tour guide took us to his family home which is used as a resting place for tourists to have tea, admire the view and see his mother and sister’s carpets.

Gladiator and Game of Thrones were filmed here. The look is unique and you feel transported to a different era and place.

Would you prefer riding an ATV, SUV or camel off into the sunset over the Sahara Desert?

Did you know how much artistry goes into carpet making?

If the carpet is wool, the hair must be brushed many times in order to get the texture right. Then it must be dyed and woven by hand.

Carpets can also be made of agave which must also be processed by hand.

Turn up the sound to hear the snapping sound of the woman’s hands at work in the video. Moroccan carpets are always made by women. It is a craft passed down by generations. They can only work a few hours a day because it is so tiring for the hands and mind. The patterns are done by memory and all have significance.

Think about all that goes into creating a piece next time you go carpet shopping.

Handmade ceramics and pottery are an art form. Can you believe they chisel by hand and put the mosaics together upside down by memory?

Turn up the sound to hear the explanation behind each piece.

Every city has its market. This was the one in Fes.

Fresh produce, spices, edible flowers, herbs and meat (including camel meat) are a feast for the senses.

In Casablanca we stumbled upon one that was more open air and grungy. Most other markets that we visited were more enclosed like this one.

All had deep red strawberries and lots of oranges. The oranges in Morocco were the juiciest and sweetest that I have ever had! And that’s coming from someone who lives in an orange producing region.
