Once the heart of Brazil’s 18th-century gold rush, this UNESCO World Heritage city became one of the wealthiest places in the Portuguese Empire. Its steep cobblestone streets, Baroque churches, and colonial architecture tell the story of a remarkable chapter in Brazil’s history.

When you visit be prepared to walk the city’s steep hills. It’s more like a hike than a stroll!
