In Miami we couldn't do anything right in the 80s. They hated the way we spoke, the way we did our hair and the way we dressed.

You can hear security staff laughing at us, some of the teachers sharing their opinions boldly and unapologetically. To most we were less than human.

Teach our children not to poke fun at others. What we're wearing should be the last thing on your mind. We were poor couldn't afford Jordan's and fancy book bags. Learn compassion, grace and respect.
..and we are STILL waiting on dat apology.

Growing up haitian... my mom did not allow me to shave any hair off body. She said it was protecting me from evil things. I never understood this thought. There's nothing cute about hairy legs. I remember being in the 5th grade and I found a razor at my cosuins house and shaved the absolute p***k out my legs. I got the biggest @$$ whooping ever.

Kids are to be seen and not heard in my community, so I never told my mom about the teasing at school. Sometimes you just had to deal with issh.
