Your moodboard is not a plan. It’s cute tho.

How I directed 5 models with one sentence.

I refused to pose ten arms and ten legs. 😂

With five models, trying to direct every hand, shoulder, and foot separately would’ve been complete chaos.

So instead, I gave everyone one shared story:

Hayley saved the good spot while her friends took their sweet time in the water. Now they’re coming back to eat the fruit they didn’t help carry, play, and settle into the afternoon.

That one sentence gave me:

→ The arrival
→ The reunion
→ Natural interaction
→ Fruit and conversation
→ Play and movement
→ A quiet ending

I didn’t need to pose five separate bodies.

I gave five people one world to live inside—and let the story create the photographs.

If your photos are feeling too posed, you’re probably trying to control every movement.

You get to the beach and start prescribing limb by limb:
turn your shoulder, move your hand, look away.

But your job is not to manufacture a pose.

Your job is to create a world she can step into.

Give her a simple prompt:
“Go find the spot where you’d actually put your towel.”
“Go see how cold the water is.”
“Stay there for a minute and look out at the water.”

That is how you create natural movement: not by directing every body part, but by giving someone a real moment to live inside.

I call it prompting.

🤔 Do you guys agree with this? Is storytelling lost because most times we creatives are just trying to keep the client happy and get paid?

I love the water bottle theory. Cuz once you’re done shooting a water bottle, by the time I put a model at a beach in front of you, you’re gonna be at a totally different level

Your photographs can be technically perfect and still fail to tell a story.

Good lighting.
Good posing.
Good location.
Beautiful images.

But when every photograph shows the same perspective, energy, and idea, the set becomes repetitive and disconnected.

Storytelling means every photograph does a different job:

One establishes the world.
One reveals the person.
One makes the product matter.
One introduces action.
One captures an unexpected moment.
One moves the viewer toward the next frame.

Changing the crop is not the same as changing the photograph.

Your images need to tell us something new—and still feel like they belong together.

I created a free Storytelling Checklist with the questions I use before a shoot, on set, and during the edit.

Comment STORY and I’ll send it to you.
