I was enjoying one of life's little guilty pleasures today watching Netflix. I had read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" several years ago when I first got my Kindle. I had seen the movie listed, but it was the Swedish version and for some reason I didn't think it came with subtitles. I had seen reviews of the English language version and they weren't very positive, but I had a lazy afternoon so I dialed up the Swedish language version (with subtitles as it turns out) and it was fabulous!

The author, Stieg Larsson, has created one of the great characters in fiction with Lisbeth Salander. I had seen reviews of the book before, but when I got my new Kindle (from my brother Dick Fisher) a few Christmas's ago it was on sale for $1.95 so I dialed it in. I could not put it down, and devoured the following two books ("The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest") immediately. Now (Spoiler Alert) as readers may know, Stieg Larsson presented his publisher with three novels, but also with the rough outlines for seven more. Unfortunately he died unexpectedly at a relatively young age, and never finished another novel. As a result, there really is no closure for those who get caught up in the Lisbeth Salander saga.

It did really bother me, but maybe in the great tradition of "Casablanca", it's better to just let her go unfinished. Maybe no real closure that would be satisfactory is possible. Anyway, if you have read the novels (or even if you haven't), the Swedish language version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is spellbinding, and dead bang on (even with the subtitles!). Also, the Swedish version is the full trilogy, so get some popcorn and a Snickers, because you are going to be watching for about nine hours. (Don't worry, at the end you will wish it was another nine hours!)

And it is Sunday night, so here are a couple of pictures of my favorite Slovakian taken this week at Michael Fryd's studio with the help of Elana Melnichenco doing hair and makeup.

PS: These are the Facebook Friendly versions of these photos. The originals are a little more interesting (okay, one is a lot more interesting!).

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all the people who have noted the photograph of Tatiana Likhina on the cover of the 2016 Beach Babes Calendar. The calendar is published annually by Zebra Publishing and it is a great honor to be chosen as the photographer who's work will appear in this year's calendar. I am particularly pleased that Zebra has chosen this wonderful image of Tatiana to grace the cover, and there is a different picture of Tatiana chosen for the month of December.

This calendar will be available for sale at many bookstores nationally and internationally including Barnes and Noble. It can also be purchased online through outlets such as Amazon.Com where it is listed as one of the most popular calendars in print.

Marion Vijar and I were working with Beverly Rose on their look book and catalog when we had an opportunity to do some more interesting (editorial) images. Three things gave us this opportunity, first one of the lines offered by Beverly Rose is the Alisha D line of jewelry, the second is that Ajit Datwani (the owner of Beverly Rose) has accumulated a number of very interesting art pieces of furniture(?), and third of course is that Ajit wanted us to incorporate some more interesting images into their look book.

When you are shooting look books and line shots for commercial fashion clients it is pretty basic work, front look, side look, back look, next! These are the shots that are not intended for direct sales to the public, but rather a way to show new lines to buyers for stores and boutiques. So, it's about showing the fabric, specific details of the fashion, lengths, colors, etc. rather than creating an aspirational image that creates a desire to own in the mind of the final buyer. And while it may seem boring at times ("front, side, back...next!" for ten hours.) it is one of the bread and butter jobs for any commercial fashion photographer (for which we are fairly paid). It is about craft (lighting, exposure, and color space) rather than art.

So, when at the end of (the second) long day, you get to stretch your mind out a little, it is a welcomed relief. Marion (who is a wonderful model I have worked with on many occasions) got into the moment, and I thought we finished strong. I was left with one thought, with these props (where does Ajit get these amazing toys?), and all this jewelry (and some interesting fashion pieces as well), their is a great magazine fashion editorial hiding here.

Soooo, if there are any fashion editors with some pages they would like to fill with some beautiful content, I can be reached almost any time here in South Beach at 305 534-9322 (or [email protected])!

So, I'm fooling around with this picture last night trying to get the crop right and make the colors pop. When I took the original picture I had cropped Angie's back foot off so I had to "shop" a foot from another picture to make it look right.

By the way, this was from the end of a long shooting day. So we got this wonderful image from just ten shots. Brilliant model.

Oh, news! After a slightly less than a two year hiatus, the mustache is back! Okay, almost, it's just ten days old. But, according to Gary, it is looking good! Valya Romanova-Model said that after it was a bit longer, she would help me dye it. I asked why, it is blonde isn't it? She looked a bit confused, and said; "No, but it can be!"

Oh.

I had a delightful visit from a model who lives in the St. Louis area on Thursday. Ashley Renee Whitman and her friend James Oldham had driven(?!!!) from St. Louis to the Miami area to do some work, and while they were here asked if they could stop in to discuss working with me. As soon as Ashley came by, I called Michael Fryd and asked if we could use his Michigan Avenue studio for some images, and Michael said Thursday afternoon worked for him.

After we finished in the studio, we took a few minutes to go over to the beach (it is a long drive, about six blocks!). It was a very cold day, I think the temperature only got up to 73 degrees (we suffer for our art!). Fortunately the water here in South Beach stays warm all year, so maybe we didn't suffer as much as, say, St. Louis (or New York, Chicago, et al!).
The pictures apparently came out great (shoot a beautiful model and people think you are a good photographer, this ain't rocket science), One Model Place chose one as their Photograph of the Day, and a magazine wanted to use the same image for their next cover (Swimsuit Issue, go figure!).

On top of all that, Marina Pascale stopped in on Saturday. Marina is the owner and designer of Marina Pascale Swimwear ( La Maison De Pascale), as was on her way back to Toronto from a business meeting in Bogata, Columbia. Marina was also happy with the new images, and hopefully will be able to put them to good use.

And now for the answer to the question which has been driving everyone crazy for about a week now..................

No, I don't own a cat.

I have a small model management company (Couture Model Management) that specializes in preparing new faces for the industry and placing the models with agencies here in South Beach, New York, and Europe. I have not updated the web page (www.couturemiami.com) in a while so I spent the evening getting the page up to date.

I currently have several models I'm doing some work with either to get them placed, or to help them with agencies outside the Miami market. Obviously my primary business is working as a fashion photographer, but over the years I have had good luck helping some models get started in the business. For those that aren't familiar with my background, I have worked in agencies both as a principal getting an agency started, and as a booker for a short period helping a friend out.

I have written several published articles on Modeling, Agents, Getting Started and the "Standard Contract" which can be reviewed at http://www.johnfisher.com/articlesonmodeling.htm. These articles on modeling have been used by many agencies over the years to help new faces and their parents gain a basic understanding of how the industry works.

I do my own website html coding, and it is a slow process.

I spent the week putting together a catalog for Marina Pascale. We shot the last images of the new suits Monday, retouched all the picturesTuesday, did the layout on Wednesday, got the final revisions done and to the printer Thursday, and delivered the printed catalogs to Orlando Friday afternoon. Woof! There are some great tear sheets for Marion Vijar, Daria Skaya, Julieanna Givens, Lissa DeLorenzo, Yulia Laktionova and Casey D'Carrion.

It was an interesting week, and it gets better by the day!

My two brothers (Dick and Bill) and my sister Judy Fisher came to visit for the weekend. My sister asked if I could find an inexpensive hotel here in South Beach, and they picked Art Basil weekend (one of the three busiest weekends of the year)! But, I did find a hotel for $89 at 20th and Collins, which was $300 cheaper than the next cheapest hotel. Okay, so they make the bed up after you arrive and give you a towel and toilet paper when you check in, but hey, cheap is cheap, right? (I think this place normally rents rooms by the hour, but made an exception for Art Basil.)

It was the first time the four of us have been together as a group without other extended family members since we were kids (which may have been a few years ago). It was a great weekend!

Then, Marina Pascale had sent me some swimsuits to photograph for a German magazine editorial (and an upcoming catalog), so Monday I had the opportunity to work with Marion Vijar. Marion and I have worked together before many times for a clothing catalog client (Beverly Rose), but this was the first time we had the freedom to stretch out artistically which editorial allows you to do. Anyway, Marion was her fantastically beatiful self, and she managed to make me look like I know what I'm doing. Michael Fryd was able to join us at Virginia Key, and did some background shots which I hope to use for my upcoming book and seminar publicity. This also gave me the opportunity to introduce Michael to Marion, and since Mike does so much catalog work as a photographer, hopefully it will be a productive association for both of them.

Mike also had the more difficult task of helping get back up after I went down on the sand for my favorite point of view shots at the beach! Getting down is something I do quite well, getting back up..... not so much! Michael used an old trick he'd seen at the circus. He walked up to me with a stick and beat me on the knees yelling "Up Simba, Up!"

I got my new dining table for the apartment yesterday. I spent the morning putting the table and the two chairs I bought with it together (and I did a good job, thank you!). I think the table matches the color and decor of my living room, so I'm happy. I ordered it from Amazon, the boxes arrived in about three days, and they were well packaged with no damage.

The table can seat six if it has too, but basically I wanted something that would comfortably seat four. I ordered only two chairs because I wasn't sure they would be of sufficient quality, but they are great so I will order two more. The table couldn't be too big or it wouldn't work in the room, but I wanted something big enough to sear four and this one (now that I have it) appears to be perfect!

For those that are familiar with my ongoing battle with my foot, the doctor removed the machine that has been helping with the healing finally! The recovery is almost complete and I should be back to doing dirty deeds done dirt cheap pretty soon!

On a related note, I have started writing a book this week. I will be doing some seminars on photography in a few months, but Gary Dean Mercer Clark suggested that since I had time available now, writing a book covering similar material would both prepare me for doing the seminars as well as provide a future income stream. I have been approached many times in the past about doing a book on fashion modeling and/or photography, but I'm a lazy bones and writing (it turns out) is real work. We will see, I'll try to keep you posted with my progress.

Oh, the AC/DC reference. I was checking out the Rolling Stones list of top five hundred songs of all time last night. Didn't get to bed until 1:30! (You want to know, I know you do. "Imagine" - John Lennon was number three, Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones number two, and "Like a Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan was number one.

As my time here in Southgate Towers may be coming to an end (after 11 years!), I've become a little reflective. I was going through a stack of older pictures trying to find a print I wanted to use, and I started thinking about how some of these images shape what I do today. Some were locations that I used for the first time, some just reminded me of models that inspired me to produce better images.

I was only able to go back to 2002 when I started using a digital SLR for my professional work. It is strange, the images never age so in my mind everyone looks like the photos! Except for me, somehow I seem to have gotten older! Hmmm.....

Anyway, I will be adding to this album as I have an opportunity to go through some older files. Photographers, we never throw away anything!
