Alaska has the highest percentage of licensed pilots per capita in the U.S. The state has had well over 9,000 active pilots, despite having only about 730,000 residents. That works out to roughly 1 active pilot for every 80-ish Alaskans. ✈️ 🚁🛩️

The Alaska DOT actually says Alaska has about 6× as many pilots per capita and 16× as many aircraft per capita compared with the U.S. overall.

🐬 Pacific White-Sided Dolphin

They live in the cold waters of the North Pacific, from Japan and Russia across to Alaska and down the western coast of North America.

They are incredibly fast swimmers, capable of reaching speeds around 25–30 mph in short bursts.

They are known for being very acrobatic, frequently leaping, riding bow waves, and porpoising alongside boats.

They sometimes associate with other dolphin species and even whales, including Dall’s porpoises and Pacific white-sided dolphins’ larger marine neighbors.

They are particularly famous for bow-riding, where they surf in the pressure wave created by a moving vessel.

📏 A male orca’s dorsal fin can reach about 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, while females typically have a shorter, more curved fin.
* 🧬 Fin shape is unique to each orca, much like a fingerprint. Researchers use it to identify individuals.
🌡️ Unlike many fish fins, the orca’s dorsal fin has no bones and little blood supply, which is why collapsed or damaged fins can be difficult to recover from.
* 🧭 Scientists can photograph dorsal fins and match them to catalogs to track individuals, families, movements, and populations.
