Though not on my target list, I did see several Great Gray Owls at the bog.
The crowds they form are annoying, to say the least. They are the most sought after thing up there. I didn’t spend much time with them. They’re cool but I prefer more intimate encounters where I can watch them behave more naturally.

No editing trickery here. Just a hawk owl sitting in the snow after a failed attempt at a vole. This was just before it flew toward us and landed on my head. All I felt was tiny little needle sharp talons poking through my winter hat and gently on my head. No broken skin at all.

How do you top a trip where I had a Northern Hawk owl land on my head? By finding the ghost that I’d been looking for (in Maine & MN) for almost a decade now.
Canada Lynx are unbelievably elusive and unquestionably unique and adorable. I actually saw 3 of them. They remind me of a sloth with their movement. Don’t be fooled because when they want to duck into the woods, they hit a different speed.

I will not reveal my location, don’t bother asking. Not only to protect the area from the mob of humans that just ruin everything but also because I spent more time (researching and in the field) money and wear and tear on my vehicles than anything I’ve ever searched out in my life. If you want to find yours, put in the work. It’s so much more rewarding. Stop chasing the social media mobs. They suck and honestly are a miserable infuriating scene. Find your own experience and take your own photos. Just get out there. Respect nature and she will reward you.

I had a completely incredible trip to MN last week.

This Northern hawk owl landed on my head for a second as it was trying to catch a vole scurrying around near the group. The same vole in its talons that it caught shortly after.

My favorite owl (totally on its own accord) landed on my head. I can’t believe I can say that.
It was actually overshadowed by another encounter that was almost a decade in the making. I’ll post that story tomorrow.

Last 2 from the trip. Don’t forget to swipe to the 2nd photo to see them both. Topaz denoise really saved me. I’m so out of practice and it was 6 degrees out. Plus my gimpy arm from my injury. Perfect storm for 600+ not sharp photos just to get these 4. 😬

I caught my vole last night…pre-flight. Zero hour, 4pm.

2023 was a horrible one for me. I injured my arm at a crappy paying job and out of commission for 7 months. Still feeling issues with that arm and about to leave another, well paying, job because of it and I have no idea what my future holds. Couldn’t really use my camera with the injury but I did get out a few times and do what I could, for my own sanity. Thankfully I found a Great Horned Owl family in the neighborhood to cheer me up, at the beginning. Here is one of the youngsters.

2024 has to be better as I couldn’t see anything worse happening. I didn’t really have much to post last year, so hopefully this year I can get back on track.
