Brian Divelbiss Photography

Brian Divelbiss Photography Unique images of people, places and things from around the globe. I grew up in a small town in the Heartland aspiring to be a physician.

Now, nearly 20 years into my practice as a hand surgeon, I realize that somewhere along the way I lost my connection to the joy of creating. Over the past five years, I have rediscovered that creative spark that resides in all of us and have married that to my passion for travel. I am so grateful for my wonderful wife, Karen, and children, Andie and Ben, as they have made the best companions for m

y journey. Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. It rekindles a sense of wonder in the world and an understanding of our deep connections to one another. I am committed to experiencing the personal transformation that happens when finding myself in new places. Through my images and stories I hope to embody the words of Marcel Proust, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes but in having new eyes.”
Join me in looking at the world and our connections with new eyes.

The extraordinary often hides within the familiar.

From a distance, São Lourenço appears rugged and austere—a landscape shaped by volcanic fire, Atlantic winds, and the relentless passage of time. But standing here, watching sunlight move across the peninsula as clouds drift overhead, I witnessed something entirely different.

What first seemed harsh gradually revealed subtle colors, intricate textures, and an astonishing interplay of light and shadow. The land itself appeared to awaken, transforming from stone into a living canvas.

Moments like this remind me why I travel with a camera. Not simply to document a place, but to discover the hidden beauty that emerges when we pause long enough to truly see.

The São Lourenço Peninsula tells the story of Madeira’s beginnings. Ancient volcanic forces created these cliffs and bays, yet today they offer something quieter—a reminder that wonder is often waiting just beyond our first impression.

The longer I spend with this photograph, the more it reveals.

At first glance, São Lourenço feels stark and rugged—a landscape sculpted by wind, salt, and volcanic fire. But the longer I stood here, the more details emerged. Delicate wildflowers clinging to rocky slopes. Layers of ancient stone painted in shades of rust, ochre, and crimson. The Atlantic stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

Madeira is often associated with lush forests and cascading waterfalls, yet this peninsula tells a different story. Here, the island’s origins are written plainly across the landscape, revealing the powerful geological forces that shaped this remarkable place.

What continues to draw me to locations like this is the reminder that beauty is not always soft. Sometimes it is rugged, resilient, and enduring.

Standing on this windswept promontory, surrounded by sea and sky, I was reminded that some of the world’s most meaningful places reveal themselves slowly—rewarding those willing to pause and look a little longer.

This image is an invitation to look more closely.

Tucked within Madeira’s ancient Laurisilva forest, this waterfall reveals itself only after a winding journey along the 25 Fontes trail. Surrounded by ferns, volcanic stone, and the constant music of flowing water, it felt less like arriving at a destination and more like stepping into a hidden sanctuary.

What draws me back to places like this is not simply their beauty, but the reminder they offer: the world still holds quiet wonders waiting beyond the familiar path.

In a busy life, moments like these invite us to slow down, listen, and reconnect with something larger than ourselves.

A monochrome study of mountain ridges near Pico do Arieiro in Madeira fading softly into distance, turning stone, shadow, and atmosphere into a quiet meditation on time. The layered forms create a grounded stillness that feels both spacious and intimate.
