El Cucuy (aka The Bogeyman)
The Legend explains to us that El Cucuy is a child eater and a kidnapper; it may immediately devour the child, leaving no trace, or it may spirit the child away to a place of no return, but it only does this to disobedient children. The Cucuy is on the look out for child's misbehavior under there bed or behind there bed, the cucuy takes the shape of any dark shadow and stays watching. It represents the opposite of the guardian angel and is frequently compared to the devil. Others see the Cucuy as a representation of the deceased of the local community.
Children have different ways of describing him.
Here at Polyester Photography are a few ideas on what he looks like according to some children we asked.
The oldest known rhyme about the Cucuy, which originated in the 17th century, is in the Auto de los desposorios de la Virgen by Juan Caxés.
The rhyme has evolved over the years, but still retains its original meaning:
Duérmete niño, duérmete ya...
Que viene el Cucuy y te comerá.
Sleep child, sleep now...
here comes the Cucuy and he will eat you.
So parents when your child says he has seen El Cucuy and you don't believe them think twice before leaving them alone in there room.
