As I sit here editing my clients' photos, I'm adjusting skin tones, balancing colors, removing temporary blemishes... the little things that don't define who someone is. But then I notice the scars, the birthmarks, the freckles, the lines life has gently etched into them, and I always pause.
As a woman, I find myself wondering about the stories behind those scars. What did they survive? What did they overcome? I wonder how many times they've tried to hide them, or how many genuine compliments they've ever received about the things that make them uniquely them. More often than not, I choose not to remove them. Not because I can't, it's because I don't think they need to disappear.
We spend so much of our lives trying to erase the evidence that we've lived. But scars are proof of healing. Birthmarks are part of the masterpiece we were born with. Wrinkles are reminders that we've laughed, cried, loved, and kept going. Those aren't imperfections to me. They're the fingerprints of a life that's been fully lived.
We're often our own worst critics, and that's okay. I think we've all been there. But I hope when my clients receive their photos, they know I saw them exactly as they are. Beautiful, resilient, and real. Sometimes the most meaningful thing I can do as a photographer isn't removing every flaw... it's reminding someone they were never a flaw to begin with.
