Some photographs are about more than the person standing in front of the camera.
This week, I had the opportunity to meet and photograph U.S. Marshal T. Michael O’Connor of the Southern District of Texas. At first glance, he has the unmistakable presence of someone who has spent a lifetime in public service. But the more you learn about him, the more you realize the badge is only one part of a much larger story.
Marshal O’Connor is a fifth-generation South Texas rancher, a Texas A&M graduate, a former Victoria County Sheriff, and a law enforcement leader with more than four decades of service. His life and career seem to carry the same values that shaped him growing up on a ranch: hard work, discipline, stewardship, integrity, and responsibility to something larger than yourself.
His family history is deeply tied to Texas. His great-great-grandfather, Thomas O’Connor, immigrated from Ireland in the 1800s and became part of Texas history, including service at the Battle of San Jacinto. Generations later, Marshal O’Connor continues that legacy through both public service and the ongoing care of his family’s ranch, which has been part of his family for nearly 200 years.
What stood out to me most was not just the title or the résumé. It was the way he carried it. There was a calmness, humility, and authenticity about him that you cannot manufacture. Those are the kinds of things a camera tends to pick up, even when no one says them out loud.
As a photographer, I’ve always believed the best images are the ones that preserve more than a moment. They preserve character, history, and a little bit of the story behind the person.
It was a privilege to meet Marshal O’Connor, hear more about his background, and capture a few frames of a man whose life reflects service, heritage, and leadership in a very genuine way. Major thank you to Marshal Tyreece Miller for the introduction!
