🦠 Herpesviruses form capsids inside the nucleus and must carry them out to become infectious particles. The nuclear egress complex acts as a gateway, facilitating capsids to exit and initiating the next steps of infection.

New work from Jens Bernhard Bosse's group at the Hannover Medical School at CSSB Hamburg, in close collaboration with the LIV Nikon Centre of Excellence ( ), shows that the MHV-68 nuclear egress complex preferentially enables the exit genome-containing capsids. The doorway isn’t random; it prefers the right type of capsid to leave, helping the virus mature more smoothly.

This finding adds to our understanding of herpesviruses and points to possible antiviral strategies that block this doorway, potentially stopping the virus from maturing and infecting.
