One of the many large pieces of debris that Hurricanes Ian and Nicole brought to our local shores this fall. It’s a really tragic way to have some foreground to use in my shots - which is a massive rarity on our beaches. In another two months we’ll be back to sea turtles for foreground instead of busted up trees.

A beautiful winter sunrise on the Florida east coast. 6 weeks ago, these pilings were under 5 feet of sand. Thanks to Hurricane Nicole and the 10+ feet of beach erosion she brought to our beaches, there are plenty of old stumps and dead trees dotted all up and down the our coast.

Living in Florida means I get no local fall color - which made me grateful to get a work trip last week to GA where I could experience the last few days of autumn. This was taken in a small green belt behind my company’s office building just after sunrise. 24 hours after taking this photo I would be cutting my trip short, racing back to FL to get home before the airports shut down in reaction to Hurricane Nicole.

Some more beach ICM, which is just really my way of side stepping a lack of any substantial foreground elements at the beach (and producing legit landscape photos) - but I have to say I love it! There is most certainly a unique skill set around ICM and it’s not just spraying and praying - although there is certainly a random element to it that isn’t as prevalent in day-to-day landscape photography. The forms, texture, and colors need to work in harmony with the overall composition, which is amazingly rare when shooting ICM - at least in my limited experience.

Some more intentional camera movements on our sunrise beach walk. If I had any talent whatsoever with paint and a brush, I would probably create want to great images that look a lot like this.

A beautiful morning on our local Florida beach. It’s look nothing like this for the last two weeks thanks to both Fiona and Ian. Our hearts go out to everyone impacted from the horrible storms this week.

I’m growing increasingly fond of using intentional camera movements on my beach photos to help add softness and texture to these shots. I’ve always been fond of painterly vibes in photos and ICM is great for that, too. It can take what would otherwise look like a fairly boring photo and turn it into some that looks more ethereal, which is right up my alley.

We see this heron almost daily, as it’s quite accustomed to people - largely because I know fishermen toss it tasty snacks every now and then. So it’s definitely not bothered when I pull out the camera - which works out well on mornings with amazing sunrises like this.

While Artemis may be on temporary hold for their launch, Space X continues to put rockets into the cosmos with surprising frequency. This was the launch of a Falcon 9 rocket from this Sunday night, as seen from my local beach about 30 miles south of Cape Canaveral. This is my second attempt at a long exposure (160 seconds) of a rocket launch. I was pleased with the exposure but I still need to perfect the focal distance and composition. It’s actually pretty fun to know you have a single chance to get things right - where you are aiming at an invisible subject. Even though I feel there is much to improve here, on the bright side, I shouldn’t have to wait too long for Artemis.

Sunrise on the beach. We’ve been bummed about the delays for the Artemis launch - which we would watch intently from this very beach - but we have our fingers crossed that the next attempt will happen at night. All rocket launches are cool to watch - but night ones from this stretch of the Florida coast are absolutely spectacular.

A female green sea turtle returns to the ocean at sunrise after a night of laying her eggs at our local beach. Nesting season is almost over, but sea turtle hatchling season is just beginning. Since moving from Austin to FL in early June, turtle sightings like this have been a near daily occurrence.

Sunrise at the beach. We walk on this beach every single morning, and are often treated with sights like this. Given we walk several miles, I never take a tripod - and am growing increasingly fond of not using one.
