Sometimes being a photographer is both a blessing and a curse…

A couple days ago I was doing my typical keyboard warrior thing, and I got a text from one of my kids: “ hey I missed the bus”

Insert the power of dad. I’ll come get you, I responded. I grabbed my keys and out the door I went. As I’m driving down the road, I noticed that the sky is quite interesting. Lots of cool clouds moving quickly, the sun is about to set, and it’s a pretty nice guy from a photographers perspective. Then I turn the corner…

I see what I would say it’s probably a top 10 for me in my lifetime sunset going on. And guess what? I didn’t grab my camera on the way out the door! Now that’s probably just as well, because I was supposed to be picking up the kid. And of course, the irony in all of this is that I would’ve completely missed the sunset if I hadn’t gotten that text.

The irony, right?

So I enjoyed the sunset as I drove, and once I picked up the boy, I pointed it out to him and we discussed it most of the way home. So it was still a great thing, but next time I’ll try to remember to always have my camera when I leave the house, so I can “have my cake, and eat it too!” :-)

Which Mica Peak???

Did you know there are 2 Mica Peaks? I discovered today... well, a couple days ago when I was taking this photo.

One is in Washington, just south of Liberty Lake. The other is in Idaho, just south of Post Falls.

Both are just over 5000 feet high, and they are within 5 miles of each other. They are considered the southernmost mountains of the Selkirk Range.

The Washington side has numerous trails for all sorts of outdoor activities reaching from Liberty Lake amost al the way to the top (he peak itself is private property).

They look super cool with snow and frost, with low clouds scraping over them.

The Spokane area is known for wheat. There are miles and miles of gorgeous rolling hills of farmland to the south and east of the city. Driving the farm roads can be a carefree and relaxing way to spend a few hours or an entire day. Even winter snow and a little fog can’t take away the peacefulness of the hills.

Indian Canyon Mystic Falls

On the west side of Spokane, not far from the airport, there is a little spring at the top of the canyon called Indian Canyon. Spring feeds a small creek that runs through Indian Canyon for a couple miles before it dumps out into the Spokane River. The upper portion of this creek and the land surrounding it is owned by Spokane city parks. It is essentially a natural area, left to do its natural thing that it does in nature. 🙂

There are some walking paths that are very mild and easy to negotiate, but if you want to get a good view of the Mystic Falls, you must not be faint of heart! Muddy, slippery, and very steep paths lead down into the creek bottom where you can get an amazing view of this tiny little waterfall.

The Monroe Street bridge crossing the Spokane river is a Spokane icon since 1911. Upon its completion on that date, it was the largest concrete arch bridge in the United States and the third longest of its type in the world. It was restored in 2005, and is easily viewed/photographed from multiple angles. This photo was taken recently from the A Place of Truths Plaza along Spokane Falls Boulevard south of the river.
