Happy October! What better way to celebrate the start of Spooky Season than with a trip to a historic cemetery?

Mount Moriah Cemetery in West Philadelphia was established in 1855; it was the first integrated cemetery in Philadelphia (because racism is larger power than death it seems), and remains the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania.

The cemetery ran out of money, however, and in 2011 the last board member died. Care ceased, and it quickly became overgrown with weeds, illegal dumping, drug deals, and the ravages of time.

About five years ago, a non-profit was created to raise funds and care for this peaceful, sacred site.

These pictures are a mixture of graves that have been cleared, and some that remain overgrown.
