In February 2019, and I went to Death Valley National Park. It was my first time there. It was while we were there that she received the initial results from tests saying she had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. A bit of irony to find refuge in such a beautiful place, and also find out you’re dying. The next three months of taking care of her before watching her take her last breath went in a blink of an eye. If you have someone significant in your life, don’t just recognize that love and appreciation on the one day that society tells us too, do it everyday. You don’t know when the day will come that they are gone. It could be ten years from now, three months, or even tomorrow.

I hope you all have an incredible Valentines Day whether you have someone to share it with, or are like me spending it alone remembering the love I once got to share with an incredible human being.

Over eleven years ago, invited me to co-lead a photography workshop with him at the Fort Rock Homestead Museum in Central Oregon. I captured this the night that we scouted the site with the groundskeeper of the homestead museum in tow. It was a fun spot for a workshop with the exception of the sodium v***r lights across the street at the local tavern. As I recall we light painted this scene with a flashlight or cell phone to capture all the detail in a single exposure. This falls into my personal ethos of the only time I’ll use artificial light in my night photography, when illuminating a person or manmade object during astrophotography. When photographing landscapes at night, I prefer to rely solely on starlight/moonlight.

FYI: This site is private property and does require permission, the groundskeeper and fee to access at night.

Happy New Year! I have a bunch of prints that need a home. December was a rough month and I wound up pawning my camera gear to help me get through the month. Cook’s Meadow - Yosemite National Park

A couple days ago I posted a nighttime view of the Yosemite Valley from above at Glacier Point. This is a view the next night from the Yosemite Valley in Cook’s Meadow. The Milky Way rising above Yosemite is a beautiful sight, trying not to capture passing cars in the exposures even in the middle of the night can be a challenge. This panoramic view is made up of two rows of eleven vertical 14mm photos, twenty-two photos stitched together in Lightroom taking around twelve minutes to capture.
