It is an entirely bittersweet moment to say goodbye for now to my photography business...
I have loved this part of my life for so long, it feels a bit like my first child. My first creation, in any event. ..
Yet, there are so many reasons to put it all on hold, at least for the next year. ..
To mark the occasion, and explain to my clients, friends, and family in a bit more detail, I have written a farewell blog...
I would love it if you would take the time to read about my journey up to this point. ..
And I want to hear your thoughts on motherhood, working motherhood, and balancing the domestic with the professional. ..
You can copy and paste the link below or simply go to Olivia Leigh Photo Art and click on the Journal Page...
I look forward to seeing you all over the next 12 months in whatever ways we can show up for each other...

How to Capture Candids

I love a good staged photo as much as the next photographer… and mother. But sometimes, it can start to feel old. Like you’re always telling everyone to look at you and smile. To say “cheese!” And to “stay still!” Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. Some of the best pictures I’ve taken have been the ones where everyone is being silly, or quiet, or serious, without thinking about the camera. These are the candids that really bring the moments to life.

After all, how many carousels have you seen on Instagram that show the perfectly staged portraits, and then the chaos behind the scenes.

Well, I say bring the chaos into focus and capture those candids!

Here are my tips on how to capture candids:

Oh, dads.

If you’ve ever tried to take family photos with your husband and the father of your children, you likely know how stressed out they can be.

And it’s a different kind of stress from mom’s stress, right?

You’re running around and getting everyone dressed and ready and you want it to be perfect.

Dad stress is more like “Why are we doing this?” “Why do I have to wear this?” “Can’t we just stay home?’

They grumble and gripe and they don’t see the point of it all.

The good news is they are almost always pleased with the results.

The even better news is, I know how to help dads. In fact, it’s one of my favorite parts of photography — putting dads at ease, helping them enjoy the process, and capturing your family in your best possible light.

So, how do you deal with dad?

Just get him to show up.

I’ll take it from there.

5 Tips for Your Senior Photo Session

Summer is the best time to get your senior photo shoot done. Summer offers great weather and wonderful lighting. Your schedule probably allows for more flexibility to plan with your photographer. And you’ll have a clear marker for this milestone you are about to accomplish — your senior year! So, if you’re planning to book your senior photo session, here are some tips for how to prepare well in advance.

1. Self Care Is Everything
There is no makeup or quick fix in the world that can undo months of bad sleep, bad diet, and stress. Junior year of high school can be incredibly stressful and busy with college applications, SATs or ACTs, AP classes and more. For most juniors, there’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to grit your teeth, do your best, and get through it.

But now summer is here, school is out, and you can actually give yourself a break. And if you want the best possible photos, you will give yourself that break. It’s time to relax and recover from a grueling year. You can also take heart in the fact that for most students, senior year is much easier.

The Value of the Multigenerational Photo Shoot
It is always a surprise to me that more people don’t do multigenerational photo shoots! Gathering grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, and even far extended family can have such an impact on your family relationships and your memories, I thought I’d take the time to encourage you to schedule a session today.

Reasons to have a multigenerational photo shoot:

1. You’ll have a professional photo of all of your family members together in one place.

It’s that time of year, seniors!

We’ve got great lighting all around the valley for outside pics and most indoor venues have space and time to get you booked, so let’s schedule your senior photo sessions now.

This is the perfect time to capture you in this in-between time — you’re not quite an adult, but you’re heading straight for adulthood.

Your junior year was crazy, and your senior year should be more calm.

You want to capture yourself before the leap into the next phase of your life.

This is your moment.

If you’re not booked yet, contact me today and we’ll get you scheduled.

One of my favorite parts of photo shoots are the candid shots I get.

When you’re relaxed, playing, laughing, exploring, and just being yourself.

However, this natural state can be a challenging one for you to produce when you’re feeling stressed and anxious about your shoot.

So, here are some tips for getting great candids out of a photo shoot, whether you’re in one of my sessions or you’re trying to snap some shots on your phone:

Be present
Be in the moment. Don’t worry about what it looks like. Just sit with your kids or your loved ones and focus on whatever is happening, whatever you’re feeling, right now.

Play
There is nothing that will keep you in the moment like playing. You’ve heard the expression “be like children.” Well, it refers to kids’ ability to be in the moment. So, if you’re struggling to get present, try getting playful instead.

Follow your kids’ lead
You might not know what to do, but they do. So, while I’m giving instructions to laugh, play, walk, or wander, look to your children and let them guide you. They’ll never let you down.

That’s it for now! You can get great candid shots just imagining that I’m not there. I know you love each other very much, and I can capture that love in your photos. Now, you just have to live, play, and let your kids lead the way.

We’ll get some great shots.

There is no lighting like summer nights in Southern Oregon. I capture some of the best photos, regardless of the weather, at that golden hour throughout the summer, between 7 pm and 9 pm.

If you’re looking to book a photo session, or you’re just hoping to capture yourself and your friends and family in great shots, this is the best possible time to take those photos.

I call it the golden hour of summer nights.

Contact me today and we’ll capture those moments together.
